Newbie question here but I have searched the forum and can't really find an answer. I was wondering if their is a certain type/breed of pigeon that should be used for training purposes for introducing a young pup to birds? I thought about buying a trap and trapping some wild pigeons but in east texas they are few and far between out in the country. I have also looked around and only found homing pigeons for sale and I am assuming that will not work. Any advice?

cheapest barnyard pigeons you can find...all pigeons are "homing pigeons", they may also be tumblers, racers,or rollers...but when fed properly they will come back to a coop..if you cant find pigeons, look for banty roosters, they squawk alot but they are a good cheap substitute in some areas

Generally the Trade Days (flea markets) have pigeons for sale. Any kind of pigeon will work.

Any pigeon will do, there is no difference in smell. This past weekend I went to a pigeon shoot and was given 24 dead birds to freeze and 15 wing tipped birds to use imediately. All different colors and no problems with the dogs on any of the birds. This is the cheapest way to get birds for freezing I think. normally there are several hundred dead birds available for free after the shoot.

Check your phone book for nuisance animal trappers. Some of these pest control companies have contracts to removes pigeons from buildings and you might make a long term contact
