At what age do you start using birds in training your dogs? I am not talking about introducing the pup to birds or feathers to light the fire. I mean actual training regimen.

as soon as they are handling them properly. no chomping or feather pulling, and a good return are essential. delivery to hand is not usually a problem as a pup. i find i have to "love 'em up" until they drop it.-paul

Depends on what you mean by training. After FF for the most part, but introduced and used a bit before as well

Unless the pup has/develops a mouthing problem , I want him on birds IMMEDIATELY!

If he starts to chew on the birds - doesn't happen that often - I'll take him off the birds and wait for FF.

Good topic!

Put pups on birds asap....... We use a lot of birds until the pup starts teething.........then they start munching on them, so we quit using birds during that time and use canvas bumpers. Our 5 month old is a couple of weeks out of having all of his permanent teeth so we will be starting up with the birds again. Will see how he handles them........if he does much mouthing.........FF is in the near future!

After an introduction to birds at about 5/6 weeks to establish if the dog has enough prey drive.
No more birds till FF(on Birds) is complete and the tools for correcting a problem are in hand.
