I have a ylm that is pretty itchy. Vet thinks probably flea allergy, and we are trying to address that, although with cats, opossums, squirrels, etc. roaming the neighborhood I'm not too confident that we can eliminate fleas. We are also approaching it like it is a food allergy and currently feeding a lamb and rice formula feed, but can't find any no corn, no chicken, no beef treats that the knucklehead actually thinks ARE treats. Any suggestions? Have thought about just getting some french fries as he likes them and they are a different carb.

Royal canin has a good hypo allergenic treat, hills does as well but I am not a crazy about that one, maybe because I am just not a big fan of hills in general. Some people also take novel protein wet food (venison etc ) and bake it long enough to dry it out and make treats that way.

I have a treat made in bulk that is fairly hypoallergenic (it has cheese) that no dog or puppy has ever turned his nose up at. It is also made of healthy ingredients.

I had a ylm who was itchy also. We used apple slices as treats
and never had a problem. He sure looked forward to them too. Now my 5 month old loves them. Ken

Which lamb /rice food are you feeding? A lot of them contain ingrediets that won't help an allergic dog.

I would check out CANIDAE for their Lamb/Rice formula also L/B Snap-Biscuits.

I believe that we are currently on our second bag of science diet lamb and rice.
Also bought some Blue Buffalo Fish and sweet potato "treats" and the pup reacted like Tom Hanks in "Big" when he tried the caviar or escargot or whatever it was. If I give him one, I usually find it later laying on the floor somewhere.

Both of my pups are really itchy as well, one is 8 mths and the other 2 yrs. My vet told me to give them fish oil pills, I give them one a day and it's done the trick.
What was the dose on the fish oil? Did you have any unpleasant side effects (scours, etc)?

I've had a couple of customers have good success using very small cubes of lean ham for treats, because pork tends to be a novel protein for most dogs.

Before starting the food circus have your vet do a blood allergy draw. It is a bit pricy, I think I paid about $200 for it 5 years ago but it was well worth the money. My dog has mild reactions to some pollins but dust mites were off the scale. He appears to have outgrown the issue.
Also at the time I had 3 really itchy dogs just before this, we treated all for saracoptic mange and only the one still itched. All tested neg on the skin scapings but it had to have been the issue as all responded to the treatment, and they have never itched again like that.

I agree 100 % - do the blood testing and find out for sure what the allergy culprits are!! Easier on the dog and cheaper in the long run than trying this that and the other thing hoping to find the right food.
