Actually, I never really waterfowl hunted until I had a trained retriever. I guess I kinda got the cart before the horse.

Why else would you have a retriever? I wouldn't go hunting without my dog and if all else fails I would take a fabulous hunting dog that is a poor trial/tester than the other way around any day. Tests are just tune ups in the off season for both of us, me as a handler and her as a proficient retriever so we'll be even more prepared when the real thing comes.

Yeah......I'm in the same boat as Hookset - had my dog first, trained him, ran a few HTs, got a few ribbons and then went hunting! Can't imagine not hunting with my dog(s). Heck I bring them along to elk camp and you can't use dogs here, but it sure is nice to have them at camp wagging their tails as happy as can be when I get back for dinner!

What fun would it be to hunt without your dog(s)??

It must be a trick poll??

We have six Labs, and they all get to hunt to every year.
Same here but not as much as I would like too. Gators put the begining of duck season out of the picture so we hunt a lot of dove and sometimes quail. We get are share of ducks too though.
Going to Mississippi in December just so I can take one of my dogs on his first timber hunt. I have turned down many a dove shoot because they would not allow dogs.

Dumb question #1: What is a "timber" hunt?

Dumb question #2: Why wouldn't they allow dogs on a dove shoot?

Thank you for allowing newbie to post...
