Okay, came home tonight and found a bottle of Vitamin K which had been prescribed for one of my dogs, on the floor, the bottle is chewed up and empty.

I know who the culprit is....and it seems that she may have ingested about 40 25mg tablets? I called my vet who said it "usually" isn't toxic, we don't know when she ingested them just sometime between 3PM and 7PM.

She is acting just fine right now, but I'm alittle worried about liver toxicity? Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks

Probably worth the call... And I doubt they'd charge you just to tell you whether it was poisonous or not.

As the premier animal poison control center in North America, the APCC is your best resource for any animal poison-related emergency, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you think that your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, make the call that can make all the difference: (888) 426-4435. A $55 consultation fee may be applied to your credit card.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. If memory serves me right (I'm at home with no medial books) the only time Vit K causes a problem at higher dosages is when given new borns that have an under-developed or very immature liver. A normal dog with a normal working liver should break it down and excrete it through the biliary system and out the poop--it's actually one of the safest fat soluble vitamins when it comes to toxicity.

I think it affects clotting of blood also. You might want to check that out.

Thanks everyone for your quick responses......

Just checked with poison control and they said it shouldn't be an issue for a mature 65lb female.......

(Who is a baaaad girl !! )

Anyway, just in case it happens to anybody else......I am just watching her but she seems just fine.

Ya just never know regards,

Vit K is the antidote to rat poison (cumidin sp). It negates the anticlotting properties. I know this from experience with a Australian terrier.

Vitamin K is necessary for the normal coagulation cascade to progress. Unless the dog is on Coumadin for blood thinning, which of course it isn't, he should be ok.

Would this "baaaad girl" happen to be the mother of the best little chocolate girl in the world????

My male lab "retrieved" a box of rat poison from the neighbors garage when he was about 8 months old. Vitamin K was what was prescribed for him after a hefty dose of hydrogen peroxide get him to vomit.

I thought of all of you Sunday (one year since I made the marathon trip to get Hope). I hope all is well with you guys.

Yes Bob, I "Hope" your girl isn't as big a trouble maker as her momma!
She can be a baad girl when she wants to be. But I still love her

The Vit K was for Colt who we thought got into some poison over memorial day weekend.....luckily that wasn't the case and we were just keeping it on hand....but of course, not anymore!

Sent ya a PM......
