My 1st ever question on RTF.

I have heard the term walking baseball but what is it. Can some please explain what it is and what it accomplishes?

Thanks

Walking baseball is a handling drill designed to get the dog used to going in the direction you send them rather than to a particular spot. Basically it is like a baseball drill, but you move around so that the baseball diamond is constantly changing. It is one of those drills that is much much easier to do than it is to explain. I don't know of a good description available on the web, but the drill originates from DL and Ann Walters classic book "Training Retrievers to Handle". Evan Graham wrote up a nice description of this drill in an article titled "Walking Baseball Fundamentals" in The Retriever Journal Volume X Number 4, Apr 2005. It is also described in James Spencers book "Retriever Training Drills for Blind Retrieves" and no doubt a host of other places.

I hope this helps,

Regards, Jason.
