Vicky’s excellent and very diplomatic answer to a question earlier this morning

Hey *******,
I've judged a couple of times for ******* ********. First class club!! They had good grounds, enough help and lots of hospitality for the judges and the participants.
I found that the judges they had when I was there were all "hunt test minded". Challenging tests that were set up and judged fairly.
Go and have a good time :)

P.S. Don't forget to take some extra money with you to join in on the Raffle at the Dinner on Saturday night. :)
Got me thinking. When you are deciding to run and the judges listed are some you have never run under or heard of. Do you put your faith in the club that may be part of your regular circuit as picking folk similar to the folk they have picked in the past? Is a clubs reputation for past great tests good enough to enter with confidence? I ask because I have noticed over the years that the club I am a humble member of (Lake Champlain Retriever Club) seems to have a good reputation. I get comments from strangers at other tests about how much they enjoy coming up and running dogs. So to you all personally, what is more important, the reputation of the judge or the reputation of the club?

I have never based my decision to run or not run a hunt test or field trial on who the judges were. Not very often do I get to run under the same judges when I run a hunt test or field trial. I just line em up and run em and hope for the best.

I feel it all about the judges. Clubs sometimes have to take it or leave it with judges.
There are some A+++ Judges out there and i think they do a great job.
Then there are the others
I have watched judges scream at handlers in Junior for a simple mistake. I have watched judges talk down to handlers at all levels as if the judge was Gods gift to the test.. I have seen many judges who do not know the rules that apply to the division they are judging. etc....

So i think that the clubs sometimes either have to take what they can as far as a judge if they can not get the ones they want or not have a test.

While I definitely have my favorites (and non-favorites) of clubs I like to frequent, I make my decision on where to run based on the judges.

Or more precisely - I make my decision on where NOT to run based on the judges. That is, I have a list of judges whom I won't run under (a small list). Regardless of what club is hosting the event - including my own - if that judge is there, I won't enter. I WILL enter if it's a person whom I do not know.

Of course these days, finances play as big a part as the club and/or judge!

I would have answered this different two months ago, but after being victim of a really bad judge I had to vote judges.
I use to think like Roger, I didn't care who judged, but now I have had a bad call and seen several others that were bad enough to make a very short list of judges I will not run under, including one who loves to tell you how great his dog is, another that e-mail handlers about what they could or should have done, and the one who was a total idiot.

The club and grounds are more important to me. The clubs that are proud of what they do and are not just trying to make a buck, will try there very best to secure the best people they can. Judges that have a black cloud over them are weeded out pretty quickly. Our club takes all comments, good and bad to heart and we try to put together a weekend that MOST will enjoy.

I voted club for these reasons:

The club determines who judges for them.

A good club will have high standards for the judges chosen and expect a fair and level appropriate test.

A good club will line up their judges well in advance of the event.

A good club will "import" some judges so that there is some diversity and not ask the same judges year after year. (Although this will reduce the test profit, it certainly makes it more interesting)

A good club will benefit from the participation of it's members both as entrants and as judges. Their member's feedback is invaluable.

A good club will work with their judges and insure that the tests are safe and facilitate the appropriate grounds for the stakes.

None of the above. It is always fun to go and there are always some good people there. Some times I think twice, but what the Hell lets go and see what happens.

For me FTs are about the date and HTs are about the date and the judges.I don't worry about FT judges because they just need to fine the best dogs given what is entered. A HT judge ,in my experience, comes with more predetermined ideas. Their interpertation of the prescripted standard.

Some clubs have really bad grounds: blackberries, no cover, dropoff's, etc. They are usually not considered. Some clubs have really great grounds---but invite marginal judges-to keep the entry down? Good grounds & Good judges get an automatic entry if I have a dog ready.
Bad &/or inexperienced judges usually don't get an entry except maybe the Q, which is a stake the only thing bad that can happen is winning before you are ready!

Certain clubs always have good judges. Good grounds, lots of help, well organized. They rarely have to scramble last minute and grab whoever they can find to judge, because they've lined up their judges a year ahead of time. Good judges want to judge for clubs like this and vise versa.

I think both!!

I Keep a black book for judges I dont care for!

When I first started running tests, I noticed I ran out of pages fast!!

I also member sayin "I'll never go to X state again" or "Boy those people in that club are a bunch a HOBO'S"

I'm gonna attend my first Judges /handlers seminar in a few weeks! I've been told it will help me prepare the dog and myself, so Clubs or Judges wont make a difference!,or at least, mebe make some sense.

Purchased a new book too!

Shouldnt matter regards,
