After hunting without a dog for 2 years now, I'm thinking of getting another pup. My first dog was amazing, (easy to train, wonderful companion, house dog, etc.) but died at the young age of 4. My second dog was less than stellar. Anything that could go wrong in training would, and he just wasn't what I had hoped for. He was hyper all the time and at times was just dumber than a box of rocks! (That's what I get for buying a choco dog, huh?
) Which brings me to now.
I am not looking for a dog to trial or hunt test, but I still would would like to have a dog that could perform to a MH level in the duck blind. With 3 young boys, it will need to be a good citizen around the house too. I guess I'm concerned if I go after a pedigree stacked full of FC and AFC's, it will not be a good house dog and hyper. I know you can look at the parents disposition, but I'm sure most breeders are just gonna tell you what you want to hear. On the other hand I want a strong pedigree to ensure the dog has a ton of desire and drive to retrieve. Are there certain Sires I should look for or avoid? What else would you look for in a breeding to ensure you got what you were looking for if you were me? Thanks.
