I do both Penn Hip and OFA, and elbows at the same time. We have, not yet, done a prelim. So...we do them just a bit after two years of age.

Our retrievers are here to stay...and have not shown issues...if I thought there was reason, though, and given the activity here..would be more than willing to do prelim. Or, if the breeder asked us to do prelims..we would.

Eyes, I do yearly....puppy had eyes and heart this last fall at one of our GRC clinics (between 5 & 6 months old) and heart is done every other year..just due to the training and activity.

There is a question as to heart clearances now.. think it was Melanie that mentioned in a thread. I did read up on it..but ...until they have something better..I will continue to do the heart...as is.

Plus our new pup was thoroughly gone over by orthopedic vet before we got him..that was very nice to have done. It was a regular checkup but the orthopedic guy was requested at the practice :)

Good post Judy. Finny's here to stay too & whether or not he would/could be bred didn't influence my sending him out for winter training, so no prelims here either. I will be doing clearances (thyroid too!) late summer though. It sounds as though you'd recommend doing both OFA & Pennhip?

How often are there heart/eye clinics held? If timing doesn't work for one-who are the "go to" specialists for eyes & hearts in New England?

Thanks!

Good Morning, "M"!

Some clubs offer both spring and fall clinics..often Heart, Eyes and Microchip are also offered..I will forward any that I get to you..but in the mean-time:

home.att.net/~sbgrcnewsletter/index.html

Southern Berkshire's site has an Eye, Heart and Microchip clinic on March 11th..deadline though was March 2nd.. the specialists are listed on the downloadable flyer... Just a note that for heart, is Dr Mark Stamoulis, Diplomate, ACVIM (Cardiology) has done several of my Goldens clearances..very good with the dogs.

Yankee GRC has one coming up... in May..no date yet but they will load as soon as confirmed. www.yankeegrc.org/calendar.html

Thanks so much Judy! :) The March date wouldn't have worked for me, but I'm going to try & plan around the Yankee Golden clinic.

Feels a bit more like Spring today. Look forward to seeing you & your gang out & about!!
