A friend of mine is looking into buying a new whistle so we did an test of three popular makes the Fox-40, Mega and the Green Monster.
Three of us got out about 300 yd.
We had the same person blow each call 4 times. Using radios so we knew when and what whistle was being used.
1. Mega- None of us could hear it. Orange and black models
2. Fox 40- One of the three could hear it.
3. Green Monster- All could hear it.

I have not used the Fox 40 so I can make no comments regarding that model. Both the Mega and the GM take the same amount of effort to blow, both take little effort to make a loud sound. The GM is harder to modulate the softer sounds. It takes a little practice.
Another note on the Green Monster is the sound sounds "odd" to our ears, though that may be a good thing. Supposedly it produces about a 8 kHz note, which is in the range of dog's greatest hearing sensitivity of 4-10 kHz. Do hunt test folks need a loud whistle like that. I would say ABSOLUTLY. Last year I ran blind on a master test. The dog was running through splash water at 100 yd and couldn't hear even the Green Monster!

it only matters if the dogs can hear it, the orange pealess Gonia megawhistle is the easiest to blow and hold in your mouth and it is heard well by the dogs, my Green Monster has collected quite a bit of dust, I no longer have a need for it

I did a test with the GM and the clear Mega whistle at 300 yards.

You can hear the GM.

I had to ask if had blown the clear Mega.

Then my friend blew and I listened.

I could hear the GM.

Personally I find the GM takes a lot more air than I can provide.
I also wear ear protection when using it!

I think your test would have more validity if you used dogs.

Why not place the dogs out at the same distance and whitle them in. If they respond, extend the distance until they don't respond for each whisle

I think we would all be interested in the results of this.

As Ed wrote, it doesn't matter what we hear. The key is what the dogs hear.

I use the Fox 40 to about 200 yards. Then I switch to the Orange Gonia. When I have tried the GM and the OG, I think the GM may carry a tad bit longer with the dogs. However, the OG is so much quicker to use and easier to reload, that I doubt I will go back to the GM.

Most adults have some degree of high frequency hearing loss, therefore what we hear is irrelevant. I can hear the Green Monster and I say "huh" alot and ask people to repeat themselves .

The first time I saw someone use the orange MW was last fall at at a trial I judged. Bobby George was using it exclusively and he told me he thought the dogs heard it just as well as the GM. Upon returning home I ordered one immediatelty and I use it on crosswind blinds and long blinds. I still prefer the clear Gonia whistle for everyday use and training. To me the GM is like blowing a trumpet, you almost need 2 hands to hold it and you can't hold it in your mouth and give verbal commands.

Does anyone know what kHz the Mega and the Fox 40 are? The info for the GM states it is about 8 kHz. But could not find any info on the others. That info would be useful.

Ed,
These are exactly my thoughts! I've actually blown the GM out of my mouth, when I had to put a big "tweet" out of it.

Well said!

We were using dogs, and they could not hear the clear mega's. That's when we decided to try all the whistles, to see what reaction we got.

At a FT two years ago, my son was planting a blind at over 300 yards with a very strong crosswind.

He said the only whistle he could hear was the green monster.

I still use a Gonia clear mega whistle.

Ditto to what Ed said. I LOVE my pealess Mega. I gave all my other 50 some clear Mega's away. You do need a bit more air to blow the pealess but not much more....

A super whistle...

I was a skeptic of the green monster at first. I was working for Pat the winter he was working on the GM and we used the Proto Type every day.Didn't take long to figure out how much better it was heard by dogs. I would say it is one of the most advanced and researched whistles on the market. Once I got use to blowing and using it I couldn't go back to the others. It works great on long blinds and in dead spots and in the wind or when other fail. Alot of pro's are now starting to use them on the west coast. I still use the mega whistle in the yard but on days when its' windy and I need to know they are hearing me I grab the PB 100 or the Green Monster.

It soon will be a thing of the past.... Better whistles are coming out that are louder, clearer and more user friendly....
