I'm ready to start swim-by with the youngster.

The water here isnt ready however! (still hard and will be to cold for sometime)

I realise that the swim-by is just the T in water, but would it be a waste of time to teach the concept of swim-by on land with an imaginary pond?
In other words get her used to being stopped on the way to the back pile, and casting to an over pile, then casting to opposite over pile while running past you, with a bird in mouth??

Or---- am I just revisiting the single T in the dogs mind??

Impatient regards

I assume you have Lardy's books. Look at "Training w/ Mike Lardy, Vol 1"
the article on the double T (page 24 - 27).

I'll quote from page 26: "The last step of the double T is to cast your dog to the various piles when he is returning from the main pile with the bumper in his mouth."

Lardy calls this disciplined casting.

He goes on to say (again quoting, this time from page 27): "The main purpose of disciplined casting is to prepare the dog for the "swim-by" procedure - the next and last step of this yard program."

So you can do this and then move on to pattern blinds until the water warms up enough for the swim-by.. at least that's how I read Lardy..

Those Lardy books are worth their weight in gold...

Thanks Bente!
I do have his Book/manual!
I did train the casting to the piles with bird in mouth at the TT.
I'm at a point however where i cant seem to proceed untill water temps are ready.I also read in his manual that it rare to revisit the T. or TT.

I found a small DRY pond bottom, and thought I would just teach the swim-by there, and then when pond fills, add the water!
In the DOGS mind,, Are we just back at the T in a different location??

time

I've begun to analyze things like my wife, and this is how she would view this scenario. Can it do any harm? I doubt it.
Can it do any good? How do you know unless you try it?
I'm sure some would say you're wasting yourtime. What's the worst that can happen?

LOL. Not a terribly bad idea, but probably not necessary... You may just teach him to run back and forth in ditches. haha

I would just wait and do your swimby. From my experience, if you did a good job on your T work... Swimby is really a piece of cake if you teach it in the baby steps as outlined in the material.

Spend more time moving to your other handling drills and working on your cold blind stuff. THAT is what will make swimby even easier...

Good luck!

Lardy also states that no water training if the water temp is below 55.
Based on your weather, I would be waiting.

When doing the swim-by procedure, the dog is in the water ALOT.
I would NOT want to risk giving the dog a bad attitude about the water at this time.
