I have a 23 month old BLF. She and I were sitting in the living room tonight watching football. A neighbor (child) approaches the door (front door is open with a closed, full view glass storm door). The dog barked like I have never heard before; this was an alert kind of bark. It was deep and she barked multiple times. My wife heard her bark like this one other time when the gas man approached the back of the house. She was inside then as well. Should I be concerned or thankful? She has never been aggressive. As a matter of fact, she nuzzled up to someone she had never met this morning in the duck blind. What do ya'll think?

Thanks
Brian

Our 13 y/o YLF has always protected my wife against questionable persons. Most get by no problem but others the hackles raise or a bark session comes on. Gotta love a protective Lab.

My blf is also like that ,especially if if she is in the car with my kids. Loyalty and protection are qualities that I think is a good thing. I first noticed it last year around Christmas when our family went to a light display that you drive through ,as we pulled up and I rolled my window down to pay when she heard a strange voice she came from the back of the suv to the front seat in a split second with her hair on her back standing up.
Although when around people in public she is a perfect lady, but on her turf she doesnt like new people around the kids until she has smelt them out.

Around here there are a lot of Heelers and Australian Sheepdogs that ride in the backs of pickups or on welding trucks. Mostly great little fellers when they are running around on the ground; wouldn't even think of trying to pet one when it's on the truck. Generally stay back at least double what I think the reach is. Circumstances can make a big difference in behavior.

mine's the same way, full window storm door barks at everything that goes by. but only lets out the alert, warning bark when we get solicitors (adults) or random workers. My wife has said he's really protective when I'm not home. i actually don't mind, he's quick to listen so it's never been an issue.
