I have access to a small training pond that is five minutes away. It is extremely
useful. My use has been "maintained" by keeping the shoreline "clean".

Went there this morning to do a session of "weed whacking" and it is going through
the worst ever algae bloom. A lot of rain, water run-off from farms upstream plus
warm weather has been a bad combination. A couple of weeks ago there was a hint
of the impending algae issue.

In the past, the owner treated the water. It probably will not happen this year. I was
thinking it might be a good gesture for me to do it once in awhile. It is 90X30 yards
and about about 8-9 feet deep max. The bottom is deep silt/mud.

With what and how much might that cost?

I Cant remember the name of the company off the top of my head, but when I inquired about treatment for blue/green algae they were able to google earth the pond, get a very close estimate to its size and then recommend the amount of chemical I would need to treat this pond.
 
Aquacide? This might be the company name.
I use their products. Can use the pond the same day very eco friendly. If the owner has interest in fishing then your choices go down and cost go up.
 
I'm no expert on algae but it could be duckweed which all of a sudden covers a small pond at this time of the year. Look at it.
DUCKWEED
(Lemna minor)

This small floating green plant has a 1-2 inch thread-like root and is often mistaken for algae. It is most commonly seen in older, nutrient-rich ponds. Duckweed is notorious for covering the entire pond surface and may induce a fish kill by not allowing sunlight to penetrate the water.

Treatment Options: Sonar® A.S., Sonar® RTU, Sonar® Genesis, Clipper with Cide-Kick® II or Reward® with Cide-Kick® II .

1 gallon makes 11 gallons - This will do a 1/2 acre pond

Use Hudson type sprayer

Spray from bank as far as your sprayer will go - The Captain will dissolve the Algaea wether it touches it or not - The chemical mixes into the pond water

Should see results within 2 hours - will take 10 days to rid of 90% - Respray if necessary in 14 days
 
On the way home from training, I stopped at Thorson Pond to obtain more information about the "surface weed" issue.
A "Kwick drive-by shooting" provided photos that definitely identify the primary "criminal" as "duckweed". :)

You will need an aquatic herbicide for that.

Any algae that floats on the water can usually be taken care of with copper sulfate
 
aeration is one of the easiest ways to mitigate many pond issues. There are some ways to use floating biomass islands in conjunction with aeration which is supposed to work really well and can be a real good DYI / non chemical alternative. Chemicals are expensive and don't work on larger bodies of water unless applied consistently on a regular schedule. I was curious about the bales. I've heard from a few people they work well but, I've never seen anyone use them in practice. Getting oxygen into a pond and moving water is usually the main missing component of algae and unwanted growth issues. stagnation is usually the first problem.
 
I'd just ignore duckweed. My ponds have more serious problems with deer tongue and coontail plus some filamentous algae. I've tried various chemicals and grass carp. I had a small solar powered aerator that the mice destroyed. I'm thinking of running electric power to the pond for bigger aerators.
 
I have been doing a lot of research into aeration since my pond is going to need some. Do realize that diffusion type aerators are better for deeper ponds, in shallow ponds where the bottom is 8 feet or less, the air spend too little time in contact with the water to dissolve a significant amount of oxygen in the the water, and it is harder to create a circulation of water from bottom to top. For shallow ponds look into Venturi aerators.
When you shop for diffusion aerators you will see that a system will aerate a 1 acre pond at 12 feet, half an acre at 8 feet and a 1/4 acre at 4 feet of depth. I am probably going to get two Venturi aerators for my pond. Its long and narrow with max depth 11 feet but atleast half the pong is 8 feet or less. Supposedly the Venturi aerators use less electricity.
