Disclaimer - I will be going to Vet Monday AM sharp.

Anyone know or have an effective remedy for removing/passing a blockage that has progressed past the stomach? Could Canned Pumpkin or Mineral Oil help ease it through? Any benefit of trying peroxide more than once? If the object is small enough a home remedy could be worth a try?

Thanks for any/all thoughts.

PS See above, thanks.

Peroxide will not help at this point and could possibly cause complications.

If you know it is truly blockage then you need to get to the Vet now vs. tomorrow morning! Time is key to keep the damage to a minimum.

Also what specifically do you think is causing the blockage?

How much? I would highly recommend getting to the Vet now! See my thread about Flash....nylon can cause a linear blockage.

One thing I noticed with Flash was you could not push on the sides of his tummy area, he was very, very tight. He was also very, very uncomfortable.

Also how long ago and how much?

I don't know your details but I had a dog eat carpet once and we gave her a tube of the stuff you give cats for furballs. It just oils everything. Gave her one in the morning and one at night and she passed it. Had to work at it hard but I think it was better for her than cutting her open.

How sick is the dog acting, i.e., still eating, any vomiting, able to pass stool?

When I had Tiger at the emergency vet with his blockage, we didn't know what he had eaten, it didn't show on the x-ray, and they thought he might pass it. They had him under observation and when the bits of liquid he was vomiting up turned from bright yellow to brownish and very bad-smelling, they took that as a sign it was stuck. At that point, they planned to get him in surgery as soon as practical, because the intestinal lining can get damaged, making surgery more complicated and recovery less certain.

This is FYI. I personally don't feel confident making this kind of determination at home. Note that if your emergency vet does what mine did, observe to see if surgery is indicated, you will only be out the cost of the office visit and x-rays. Going to the vet doesn't necessarily mean surgery--unless he needs it.

Wouldn't wait til Monday.... If you mean something like pantyhose, it could tie the intestines up in a knot and cause necrosis.... Been there, done that... No time to waste, honestly.

His attitude is still upbeat and the nylon is a guess only could have been a childs sock? Has the squirts so not completely plugged and vomits solids within 1/2 hr of eating. His sides are not tender or hard.

If he's still vomiting, it more than likely hasn't passed into the intestines -- OR it's stuck in the valve.... If you wait until he's painful, it may be too late. Blockages are NOT something to wait out unless under advisement of your vet... It's very easy to get a raging infection or necrosis and lose too much of the digestive system to survive....

I had a young male that got something hung up in his stomach and intestine. He acted fine except for the vomiting. You are risking your dog's life. If his gums are tacky you need to take him to an ER now.

Our boy Flash was fine until about 10:30 or 11 pm. When the vet did surgery (3 am), he told us part of the intestines were purple, meaning pooling blood, and near tissue death. Any longer and he would have had toe remove some of the intestine.

Part of the intestine had even been pulled back inside itself.

Not saying this is the case with your dog, but if there is a blockage somewhere past the stomach, I would personally want a vet to look at it.

I checked Flash's gums and they weren't tacky when we left the house, with in the 40 minutes it took us to get him to the Vet they were still okay, but by the tme he was ready for surgery they were tacky and it was obvious he was in distress....it doesn't take long to go from upbeat to deathly ill.....Monday is such a long way away....keep us posted.

From all of us who've had blockages, we may sound like we are overreacting and I know ER vets aren't cheap, but truly, better safe than sorry.

To me, the thing that really sucks is that this stuff always waits until after noon on Saturday to become an issue....
Or a holiday. I'm glad I have my vet's home and cell numbers but doesn't make that call much easier. Like last Easter Sunday morning, "Hi, Todd, um, have a sick one here. . ."

Yeah, I have those. I don't want to use them unless I have to... While I wouldn't want to pay the ER vet, it's more that I only really trust MY vet... That's more of the issue for me (NOT saying the money isn't LOL).

I feel badly even calling into the office... I had to call today to see if we could crazy glue one of our dog's lips back together. She got this really weird tear - we have no idea how or where. I try to send a fax or leave a msg so they can call me back when I have a dumb question so I don't waste their time.

Dave, you really need to take him to the Vet for an x-ray ASAP. If the dog continues to vomit it will become dehydrated. If the blockage is in the intestine and remains there the intestine will start to deteriorate and in most cases can't be repaired. And it's not uncommon for dogs with obstructions to have diarrhea...been there done that.

Of all people I understand how much it sucks to have to go to the emergency Vet...I am such a good customer they don't ask me for a deposit now <VBG> However, it really sucks losing a dog to an obstruction...been there done that too :(
