Recently sold a litter of black pups, a couple of buyers were worried about
getting a leftover. List your leftovers that where great dogs.

I had some

Betty (no papers)

Melody's Mystical Rose JH .....Mysty

O. D. Hazardous Independence........O D

Duke,

Emma's Perfect Storm Kate SH.......Kate, Kate pedigree lists DOB at 8/31/08, Breeder told me she was really born on Sept 1st. .........that was the same DOB as Mysty.

Candlewood's Tanks A Lot "Lottie"

No need to go any further.

I ended up with a "leftover" pup of 7 months old. Took 4th place in her first Qual. and is now a MH at age 4.

I had 2 "leftover" pups in the second of my two Cosmo breedings. One turned out to be a "leftover" because the original purchaser backed out due to a "lack of funds". She is now my unbelievably talented MH Jiggy. The other was "green" male puppy that I had actually picked out as one of 3 "pick" pups for Mr.Larry Clement, but Larry decided on 2 males and a female. Larry's decision made available one male pup. I then contacted 2 or 3 folks that had been on my male waiting list. They politely declined what they thought must be a reject pup. Then I advertised that I had one male pup available due to buyer back out. No calls. Finally, 3 weeks later, a guy called about the last pup. He too was a little concerned. I finally told him that the pup was my favorite male and I'd deliver the pup to a halfway point the next day, and give him his gas money if he didnt like him.
He liked the pup, named him Butch's Dream Code of TCR, and less than 4 years later he became better known as FC-Butch's Dream Code of TCR!!!
I've been involved in 6 breeding to date, and can say that either the runts/or leftovers have all panned out well.

Litters 2 & 4 had either a runt or a leftover.

Litter 2 runt=QAA, leftovers=FC & MH.
Litter 4 runt=QAA.

My left over pup is the first dog I have tried to train to this level, at 25 months old she has a jh,hrc seasoned title and placed in 2 of the 5 derbys she ran in,and heading to qual's
this fall. I'll take leftovers any day if they are all this good! (Not all training done by me)

I bought a last pick of the litter, sight un seen. She lays in bed with us real good, scared of vacume cleaner. But is a real hard charger and Chocalate. Just needs a better trainer. Came from an AFC background.
Sorry no help here

I bought a blf that was the last pic of a litter of 11. She was 9 weeks old when I took her home. There was no titles on her 3 generation pedigree except 1 JH (grandparent). I joined my local HRC club and learned all I could. We got our HRCH title at 20 months passing 4/4. Also have 2 Upland passes. Oh yea, I bought her out of newspaper for $125.

I was thinking about this thread and wondering...

Is it apples to apples if you get the last pick of an NAFC x FC/AFC litter vs. the last pick of a SH x JH litter?

Probably not.

As a breeder I usually hold back one or two that I like best. I may sell if the right situation comes along, but in the case of my litters the last one left is usually the one I like best! The best dog here is from an accidental breeding of half siblings (9 pups) and the one that nobody wanted.

My last "leftover" was one of my top picks of the litter. At 17months old, he was trained to the finished level and was sold as such. New owner is tickled pink and is now thinking of running hunt tests where before he was looking for a really nice guided hunt dog.

I'm not quite so sure about the apples to apples. Talent is talent. Now, I'm not a regular field trial home, but I have dabbled a little. Most of my dogs have HT titles and have come with very fine trial pedigrees. BUT, one of the finest retrievers Ive ever stood beside was a pup that I adopted as a 13 week old backyard bred pup back in 1994. The breeder was headed to the SPCA to drop the pup off. He said that he couldn't sell Him for $100 and his wife told him to get rid of him even if it meant the SPCA. Well, I'm a sucker and I decided to take him home. He was scary smart, a pinpoint marker, immeasurable drive, and a handling machine. He was an SH at 11 months, HRCH before 2, Master passes before 2, and had more than one professional guide beg me to sell him. I'd regularly get high dollar invites to hunt ducks/geese only if I'd bring my Coal. I eventually sold him for quite a bit of money (for a backyard pup), to a wealthy business man who hunted nearly every day.
I started waterfowl hunting in 1976, at the ripe old age of 17, and I'm yet to see a finer "hunting" retriever. Now I know that most people have owned or seen a Coal, but I'm just saying...He was special!!!

Not sure if I'm remembering correctly, but from "Hey Pup Fetch it Up" doesn't Tarrant point out that King Buck and River Oaks Corky were both the leftovers of their respective litters? My copy is on loan so I'm not able to check this...

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I’ll begin this email with a paragraph or two from the great Oklahoma dog trainer Delmar Smith.

Bunch of chalk-eyed cowboys perched on Delmar’s coral poles one dusk, chewing snooze, swatting flies, talking dogs, when the subject of picking a pup came up.
A discussion goes back and forth amongst the cowboys.
Delmar listened. … “I can tell ya exactly how to pick a pup” … “And I got the facts and figgers behind it proves it”.
“Towsey was one ‘em. He was a triple national champion. He was a leftover pup. Holiday Britt was a national champion. He was a left over pup. Baconrind Rex was the cull of the pups. Buddington Pince was the cull of the pups. I could go on and on, but all them dogs is nationally known. Everybody came and got their pick and left ‘em. So that is the way I pick one. Just whatever is left and go.
The first rule for picking a pup: DON’T EVER LOOK TO PUP TO PICK A PUP. LOOK TO PARENTS.
Find the best sire and dam in the country, get a mating, grab a pup, and go.

Just as Delar said "Find the best sire and dam in the country, get a mating, grab a pup, and go. " We had a really nice breeding and decided to keep a YM & a BF. We let everyone else select their puppies and kept the last one of each. Two MHs at two years of age. It's a crap shoot.

Go to Topbrass Retrievers website and read about FC AFC Mioak's Main Event, call name "Rocky". The account is by Mickey Strandberg.
