Looking for suggestions for good dog beds for in the house. The biggest problem we have is when they get all full of hair we don't really want to wash them so they end up getting thrown away. Our last and best bed was a crib mattress that my wife made a cover for. That lasted quite a while. Any other ideas?

Among other things I use a western saddle pad bought just for that purpose. The one I got is felt and is quite thick...dog loves it. They can be washed but will take some time to dry because of the thickness.

You really can't beat the Costco dog beds. tough covers that zip off for washing, good size and stuffing and great price!
For my older dog I constructed homemade memory foam bed like this:
1. walmart twin-size memory foam topper - folded in half
2. Home Depot camping foam, cut in half
3. waterproof twin size mattress cover - like for a baby crib matt.
4.home-made cover that works like a pillow case and slips right over the whole shebang.

I like the large orthopedic beds by Foster and Smith. They hold up better than the Costco beds (which I also have) and offer more support. I put a bath mat on the bed (from Costco). Then wash the bath mat, rather than the bed. I was the mats weekly, wash the bed covers every six months.

I have 4 coolaroo beds. They are ok for house beds but do not hold up as kennel beds. I have to buy new covers every year because the dogs tear them up. I have had one in my office for years because they do not have unsupervised access it. I have medium beds in the kennels and a large in my office. They like the large better because they can stretch out. They are very easy to clean. I just hose them off.

They are not cheap, but last for YEARS....anything by Orvis. We have two dog nests, one is 12 years old, second cover. Two of the ortho beds, not the tempurpedics. Kurandas in the kennel. The dogs love the Orvis stuff and we wash regularly. You do get what you pay for usually. And in this case, the Orvis beds out perform!

Yes, I'm ready to spring for a couple Orvis beds. Very expensive, but apparently worth it.
Mike, you just have to go to the effort to unzip the cover and wash it!

I 2nd the Orvis bed. They are expensive but well worth it in the long run. We (my wife) washes his often and it looks new still.

My wife is not real excited about putting all that hair into our washing machine and dryer. I would guess we could find a way to collect most of the hair before we wash them.

I am intrigued with the Kuranda beds but not excited about how they would look in the family room, LOL. We have 2 Kong brand beds that have held up nicely, better than anything else we've tried from local suppliers, and the covers do come off for washing. I take them outside and knock them against the chain link to help get the hair off before washing them.
