Just got notice that some retreiver people were injured, and 2 killed in a boating accident.
http://www.kwqc.com/story/19875971/names-released-in-duck-hunting-accident-dnr-officers-urging-caution

William Leitner (Canton Illinois) a prior member of the Mid-Illinois club, Dan Kirk was also involved (who trains dogs with Bill), (Dan and Bill ran HRC for years) as well as Dan's grandson, age 26. I just talked to RIta Kirk, Dan's wife. Four are still hospitalized. The grandson, age 26 is out of the hospital. A young one had a subdural and had surgery. that one is in intensive care. 3 in intermediate care. And two killed.

My prayers for all, and for the families of the two lost. I understand that a member of this board has duck hunted with one of the lost men.

Be careful out there for all of you duck hunters!

Oh, that is awful .....our sincere condolences for those lost and lots of prayers that those injured are well very soon.

So sorry to hear this. :( Prayers sent for all involved and their families.

Did I read the story correctly, 7 people in a John boat and only one wearing a flotation device? A formula for disaster, so sad and so avoidable.

I've spoken now with someone who knew many of the people involved - both those in the boat as well as some involved in the rescue. (The initial rescue folks were other hunters who were all following the same corridor along the river to get to their individual spots.)

While the exact story is yet unknown, this is a very real reminder of just how easy it is for us to get distracted or overly confident when boating in the extremely dangerous conditions we face afield. Cold Water, poor visibility, distractions from gear, people, excitement, looking down at GPS instead of ahead for things like the light on top of the bouy, etc. etc.

Be safe!

Chris
