I started giving my 4 month old pup fish oil pills at breakfast two weeks ago like my breeder does with her dogs. This past week, my pup woke me up almost every night between 2 and 4 am to go outside and diarrhea. Other than the night time stomach issues, she acts normal during the day, eats all her food, and has normal stool. I asked the vet about it this morning, she didn't really have any ideas. They gave me some FortiFlora packets to promote good bacteria growth. The vet didn't think it was the fish oil pills and did not recommend to stop giving them because she got the pills for a whole week with no problems. I can't think of anything she would be getting into during the day that would upset her at night. She isn't really ever left unsupervised, and does not get any food/treats/snacks between breakfast and dinner. She gets dinner between 5 and 6 pm every night. I am feeding Eukanuba large breed puppy with nothing added except that one fish oil pill each morning. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing the night time stomach aches? Thanks.

I had a similar experience with fish oil then I switched to krill oil just to give it a try and I had it anyway - that is what I take for my joints and the pup stiffened right up - I didn't go to a vet and I dont give them every day but a couple times a week but I figure some extra joint health wont hurt - They are a bit more expensive but not by much look for coupons in your local grocery store for natural health suppliments- i got 2 bottles for the price of one recently. good luck

I also would stop the fishoil pills as long as your feeding a quality food why add them? this is a pup anything can cause tummy upset

If it was the fish oil pills causing the sickness, don't you think she would have been sick the first 5 or 6 nights that she got the pills? Also, I always give the pill in the morning with her breakfast. She poops before breakfast, then usually one or two times between breakfast and dinner, then usually once after dinner before we go to sleep for the night. If the pills were causing the sickness, wouldn't she get sick during the day since she gets the pills with breakfast? It just doesn't seem like the pills would cause problems 12-16 hours and 3 poops after she eats them. I am not above holding off on the pills, it just doesn't make sense to me that they would be the problem.

it might just be too much fish oil at this time. the first couple days the system may have been getting used to it but just couldn't handle it anymore. just giving less and see what happens. what's the worse that can happen by doing so?? nothing really.

I had a similar problem recently, where she was only sick at night. It started the week she got her last set of shots, so at about 4 months. We were also feeding Eukanuba large breed puppy, 3x daily. She was diagnosed with a bacterial infection and got put on erythromycin for 10 days and we started fortiflora. Was good while on the antibiotics, then it came back. Got put back on the antibiotics for 14 days, and we switched foods, and she got better. Not sure if it was the antibiotics or the food switch, but we switched to Eukanuba naturally wild adult dog food. She stayed on the fortiflora for about 1.5 months, and has been good since. Can't say it's the same issue, and I'm not a vet, this is just my one experience. We were getting up every night at about midnight, then every hour or 2 till 6am. Then she'd be fine all day. Good luck, its exhausting getting up every night and its not just in and out, she was out there for 20 minutes each time.

I will stop the fish oil pills starting tomorrow to see if that helps. She actually made it through last night just fine and had normal stool this morning. One thing I just remembered is that I started feeding a new bag of food this week. Its the same food as always, maybe this bag has something wrong with it? She also chewed a lot of cow patties at the ranch the weekend before she started getting sick. Could this have caused it? She has gotten into cow patties before with no issues afterwards.

I will tell you that I am a BIG fan of Forti Flora...when either one of my girls have loose stools or stomach problems, I sprinkle some Forti Flora over the dried food and within 24 hours, all is well. I also include fish oil capsules in my dogs diet and so far, haven't had any problems....it's been a couple years now.

Do you all give FortiFlora daily or just if your dog has a loose stool? I know some people give it when traveling as well, but was wondering if there is a benefit to give it daily. I also give my dogs a table spoon of plain greek yogurt every morning and a little salmon oil on their dry food at night and they are doing well with no loose stools.

I just started Forti Flora after some Giardia episodes and so far it is doing wonders for his stomach. Much better stools on Eukanuba Pro Performance.
