What started as a pup that was going to be a family companion/hunting dog has now turned into a hunt test dog.....and he's only 9 weeks old. I joined my local HRC Club in hopes of learning from some experienced people. However, now that I'm going to run some test do I need/have to join the national HRC as well? I know it isn't much money but was curious as to what I was suppose to do.

No, but it is worth it though, the magazines are informative in regards to upcoming tests, previous tests/chapter news, and once your pup starts running, look for its name and photos! You might also eventually want to judge, which requires a national membership as well. Good Luck!! Welcome to the HRC family!

I believe national HRC membership gives you a small discount on your entry fees (like $3 per entry).

It is worth being a national member IMO.

Mark-HNTFSH, while being a bit comical, is correct. You can go to their site and join. As I said earlier, I had previously joined my local club (North GA HRC) but just joined the national club this evening. BTW-HNTFSH, I'm not gonna be heading your way on the 4th but hope to get that way early to mid fall. I'll let you know.

Sounds good! If you get up over the weekend of Sept 14-15 you may want to swing by our test. Lemme know if so and I'll give you directions!

And yes - being self sufficient goes a long way in dog training. ;-)

I just went to my calendar on my phone to make it happen that weekend and realized that's the weekend my local club is hosting an event. I've yet to make a training day and this will be the first event since I joined so I'm gonna stay home that weekend. Will their be another event at your club later in the fall? If so, I'll try to get up that way then.

is your local club NGHRC? if so, then yes- we will need you here!

Did someone mention you need to register you dog with UKC in order for the point you get from passing tests to count. That is also on the UKC web site.

Yep, NGHRC it is. I'll admit, I have I idea what to expect nor how to help but plan on being there both days to help any way I can. Hopefully by then I will have been to Joe's a couple of times and will know a little more about what to do. That'll be about a month before Joe takes my pup in for training. Look forward to meeting you soon Blaine.

Thanks for mentioning that for others Patti. I was aware of that but wasn't sure if it meant my local club or national. I assume by your post it means national.
I think you may be confused. The dog must be registered with the United Kennel Club (UKC) in order to receive credit for points earned in HRC (Hunting Retriever Club) tests and any titles earned from the accumulation of those points. Titles will appear only on a UKC pedigree. There is no national vs. local question on UKC, there is only one UKC, it is a dog registry. The local vs. national thing is with the club, the Hunting Retriever Club (HRC). There is a national organization, whose members receive the magazine and discounts on entry fees. Then there are many local HRC clubs where you can join and get involved in training and testing. I hope that helps.

HuntinDawg-
Yes I was looking at it wrong. I turned in my AKC papers, 3 gen ped., reg. form and of course $$ to the UKC for getting registered with them. I knew I had to do this for points to count towards HRC. However, I'm not sure where I even came up with national vs. local having anything to do with it. Regardless, my pup should be AKC/UKC registered by next week and I am already a HRC national member and a North GA HRC member. So, we should be good to go.....right? Well, everything but knowing how to retrieve birds on land/water, return to hand, sit, heel, here, honor. Yikes!!! I/we got a lot of work left. I'm really looking forward to the experience though.

.....you're gonna get hooked...
I'm afraid it's too late. The bad part is, I've never been to a trial/test, training day, etc. I can only imagine what my wife is going to think after I get back from a few of those. I guess I might should make the pup's outside kennel a little nicer than originally planned.

Or better yet, take her with you and she will get hooked as well.
I took my pup to one hunt test and one field trial after all his puppy shots and it was a lot of fun, for the both of us.
Good luck!
