Ponds in Texas

I am from central CA, working near Houston, living around Pasadena, LaPorte area. I don't have my dogs here, but training is still programed. In CA we are lucky to find a puddle for water, but around here there are retention ponds or what ever they call them everywhere. Saw some nice ponds behind the post office, a swim by pond behind the grocery store. Are they full of snakes and gators ?
How do you guys find places to train here ? This is the post office pond..

First lesson in Texas terminology; ponds are usually referred to as "tanks", and designated as the big tank or the little tank in a certain pasture..In SE Texas you assume that any tank has snakes and gators, especially in areas like Port Arthur...Most grounds in Texas are leased for anything from grazing to dove hunting to duck hunting...dog training is very low on the pecking order..The prime training areas are usually private or accessible because of some type of friendship with the owners of that property and the hope that the property doesnt get leased or sold out from underneath you...

In Texas as in many other places, silence is golden...if you find a place to train, keep quiet about it, hide your truck while you are there, because if someone sees you train on it, sure as the sun comes up someone will try and lease the spot for either hunting/fishing/dog training...

You should contact Marcy Wright and get over to the Trott/ Farmer seminar while you are down there. Its not that far from you.

I am obviously ignorant, we have, and always have referred to our ponds as ponds not "tanks".

Guess that accounts for my use of the word tanks, because I was once corrected when I referred to a 50 acre body of water as a lake and was told it was the large tank, and yes it was central Texas just outside of Austin

Been my experience Ed that is a term used more to our West and South.

I live just east of Laporte in Baytown and training grounds are scarce in the area. Especially the availability of "safe Water". Snakes not so much, but gators a big problem. If you do find good water to train, please survey the pond for several days before attempting to train. A few years ago, I almost got my golden in trouble with a huge gator!

Tank = stock tank, typically a hole dug with a bulldozer usually small (1/3 acre) to collect rainfall runoff for livestock.

Pond = a water holding structure may be natural or man made with multiple uses including fishing, swimming, and dog training, ponds may be any size but generally 20-30 acres or less, around here anything larger is a lake.

Country people and ******** may refer to any size body of water as a tank .

somehow Candlewoods Pond's a Lot and Candlewoods Super Ponder just dont have the same zing...and Pond Em By Surprise is out of the question :razz::p
