The standard, as written, is fine. It's the judging that is not. The standard is ignored, and there is zero accountability.

The breed standard as it applies to Labrador Retrievers is sort of like calling a fat kid husky. Eye of the beholder regards.

Its called substance. Chris Wincek at Kerrybrook referred to it as "substance abuse" about the best description I've heard.

The Golden Retriever Club of America produces the Grca News every other month. It is very nicely done with articles, updates on legislation, brags, etc. in every issue part of the breed standard is reviewed and discussed. Several years ago the breed standard committee sent a letter to all of the AKC judges with the breed standard attached. They requested the standard be reviewed and that judges judge to the standard. The initial part of the standard was in bold lettering, the part that states the goldens are first and foremost retrievers and should be show in hard working condition. The letter was sent out because the committee was concerned that the standard was not being followed. While there are definetely some differences in dogs that are just show vs dogs that are just field, those differences are not as striking as those seen in the Labs. Maybe your National committee should get involved before your breed is further damaged.

I can tell a show Golden from a Field Golden. I do like what you have said the GRCA has done as far as pushing the Field Look.

Part of the problem may be that there are ALOT of breeders that don't belong to the LRC and hence don't care what they say. The LRC has a requirement that it's members cannot use the CH designation unless the dog has a WC or above. In addition, there is an off shot club called the National Labrador Retriever Club. They have no such requirement and they adhere to the FCI standard which does not have the DQ for height. FCI calls for a shorter animal: SIZE: Ideal height at withers: dogs 56 - 57 cms (22 - 22.5 ins); bitches 54 - 56 cms (21.5 ins).

Some show breeders today go for the Gold and produce a well balanced Labrador with correct temperament . Yet Dog Shows are like a beauty pageant. Judges like a type. All they are judging is looks. They do not know how well a dog meets all aspects of the standard just by looking at stack and trot.
Part of the issue today is titling ones dog. At the least no CH should be rewarded without having at least a junior Hunter title. Many Lab breeders who only Show do not even consider the Labrador to be a Retriever and a Sporting/ Gun Dog.
Only 60 or so Labrador's have ever received a Bench CH and Master Hunter title. The gap widens everyday between the field bred Labs and the Show. It is just a fact of life that Labradors have become a specialized dog that can fit many niches.
It is very hard today for the average hunter to get an old fashioned Dual Purpose Lab in the English tradition.

In the goldens, the advent of agility has helped narrow the show only vs performance dog. While agility is not field, it is still a performance event that requires a healthy athletic dog with drive and trainability. While many show goldens will never do field, at least they are being trained ands run. What I see with the labs is the athletic build, soundness and trainability are being bred out for the sake of a blocky head. Many of our club members that started running agility became interested in other performance events and are coming out to train. Most have gotten at least a JH on their dogs and may go further with the next dog. One of our members who has several show CH comes out with her dogs and almost all of them get their WC and JH. Although field will always be first for me, I enjoy other performance events as well.
