Got the word a couple of days ago that Omega Farms is going to be sold. It is a sad time for me, as I really enjoyed training there. Most of my freinds are dog people, that I met at the farm. I am afraid that people will leave the sport now that Omega is gone. Omega brought the Field and show groups together for retriever training. I will miss seeing these people.

No, but I see you are from Michigan. You may be familar with Omega? When parts of the farm have been sold, drain tile was put in, ponds drained and crops put in. I expect this to happen with future owner. It was explained that way to me, by someone who works for the farm. He has knowledge that I do not have regarding the upcoming sale of the farm.He told me he expects one of three or four farmers to buy property, drain it and put crops in.

It is going to be sold at auction. Trotter just sent an email to all the trainers. Cliff is mocing his cattle operations to a warmer climate. No more tests or trials after Flyaway in May. And no more training. There are 640 acres.

That's too bad, I was hoping to run a couple of tests there this year, never been there and heard good things about the grounds

A real shame. The wife and I always enjoyed it there. A class operation that was a direct reflection of the people running it. I imagine it's closing will have a huge impact on the retriever community in a multi state area.

retriever folk all seem so sad,
when a nice investment can be had!

if your wallet's to thin to own this land,
like minded partners could lend a hand!

now is not a time to cry,
attend the auction and buy, buy, buy!

Thats what I was thinking- only I'm not as clever this morning. Auctoins are open to the public, why couldnt a dog person, or several, buy it and keep it for dog stuff.?
What a shame to lose such a nice place for dog work..

john,
i thought all us dog folk wuz rich????? lol

how about this idea:
form a group called the asslrg(american society for the salvation of lost retriever grounds). the asslarge could produce a commercial like the aspca's. the commercial could show labs, chessies, goldens, fcr's, aws etc., all looking sadly at the camera from behind the "jail bars" of standing corn. sad background music could play while a recognizable movie star's voice told what tragedy it was for these dogs not to be able to run their marks in these tall crops and how for a $49 a month contribution from you, ten dogs would have property to run on for the rest of their lives!

proforma financials;
20,000 cntrbrtrs at $49/mnth for 12 mnths = $11.6mil
less 640 acres at $3,000/acre = - 1.9mil
less $20k prdctn and $2mil nat cbl med buy= - 2.2mil
less compensation of me for my idea = - 2.0mil
less ten years maintenance escrow = - 3.0mil
less 20,000 asslrg t-shirts @$20 each = - 0.4mil

funds avail for future media buy and admin 2.1mil

Yes same here! No money. IMO key ingredient. :) Too bad It is a lovely piece of property. I have trained and shown there. Great experience. Many owners of the property in the retriever world-not sure how that would settle out!! JMO

Pretty simple folks........
One generation earns it

Next generation spends it

Next generation loses it.

IT HOLDS TRUE!!!!! Jim

I know your joking but in all seriousness ,you need to look at it as a tax write off......hence sub chapter s.......Its a problem with clubs nationwide........
The right people could make it work ....Lets face it folks, the days of Larken,Stroud,Belmont,Murnaine are gone. That property coul be a comercial preserve from oct through march.....some land leased for crops .....and other for field trial venues.....Theres a good manager there as far as Jim.....it would work. Jim

I agree that somebody could probably make something work there. If that someone has enough money to buy it, it wouldn't really have to work...

Reality is that if someone could afford it they'd probably buy the equivalent property in the south.
