I did a forum search weeks ago and we bathed the dog 6 times, talked to the vet. House has been cleaned top to bottom several times, I Had to sleep in the truck one night and the next night shove Vicks up my nose and take a sleeping pill.
How do we get the smell out of the house and my truck. Freshly washed towels smell like skunk.
Ideas?

I've only done it once, but baking soda, dish soap, peroxide, and water solution worked for me. I saw her get sprayed, immediately bathed with Pantene pro v (first thing I could grab) while a friend mixed the concoction. It worked so well she slept inside with me that night. She still had a slight lingering smell when she would get wet for a little while. It never came out of her transflex collar though. Maybe rebathe the dog and febreeze the house and keep candles lit for a while. Maybe leave windows open if you can to get fresh air in and carry any lingering smell out.

The best solution to use is 1qt of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 c baking soda, 1-2 tsp Dawn dishwashing liquid. We used this on a Chow mix mutt years ago with great success. Maybe use same mixture to clean anything washable.
We were lucky, the offending skunk was in our own yard and the dog was caught before she bolted inside the house.
Otherwise I suggest calling your insurance companies, both homeowners and car. They are used to dealing with all kinds of disasters, and you might even be covered. We had Serve-Pro sent by insurance to clean up fairly minor flooding when basement drains in our finished basement backed up. Carpet was discarded and replaced, but the cleaning prevented any mold or mildew and completely eliminated the odor. Even if not covered by insurance a similar environmental cleaning service might be worthwhile, maybe an auto detailer for the truck.
Good Luck.

We used the peroxide, baking soda , dish soap mix at least 5-6 times. I finally rubbed her down with a dryer sheet tonight. See how that goes and atleast my hands smell fu fu. It happened weeks ago/
I think time is the answer.
Dang I hope we never gota deal with this again

If the odor is in the house, what about renting one of the devices from ServPro or Service Master that is designed to get rid of smoke or mildew odors.

I see the skunk recipe is now widely known and that's good. However, it appears that in the passing around to folks that an important step is too often missed. To be truly effective, you can't wash to dog before applying the peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap. This is a tip from the inventor of the stuff ... not me but a chemist in the Chicago area. According to him, water "sets" the chemical in the stink that causes the stink to linger.

So you mix the concoction without adding any water, then just wash the dog with it? Don't even spray the dog to get it wet before washing it?

jackh --

Yes. Mix the peroxide, baking soa, and dish soap and rinse the dog. BTW, you can't pre-mix the stuff because it's "explosive."

Below is a copy from a much earlier post I kept a copy of....

SKUNK ODOR RECIPIE
2 cups Hydrogen Peroxide
2 cups of White Vinegar
2 Tablespoons of Baking Soda
1 Tablespoon of liquid soap to break up the oil in the skunk spray (Dawn dishwashing soap works well)
1 Gallon of warm water
Mix it all in a pail (not a closed container), dunk a sponge in it and bath the dog. Try not to get mixture in the dog’s ear canals or eyes.
Let sit for 5 minutes…rinse well.

I keep the above in a pail all together in the basement and replace the peroxide when i replace the batteries in the smoke detectors -

Brad-

You can't mix up a batch and put it in a bottle for when you need it. The peroxide and baking soda, when mixed, are very rapid expanders ... hence, "explosive". You keep the ingredients on hand and mix it when you need it.

Where would I buy a product like this.

I dont understand the commint about not to premix cause its explosive. I was told and read to mix it all togethor

Try a local ACE hardware for that product. I have purchased it at Menards here in MN, but it is a national brand.

Another product I ALWAYS carry is Skunk Off. I is an enzymatic spray that really works well on a freshly sprayed dog or clothing. Not sure how it would do days/weeks later but worth a try. Last batch I got was off Amazon but some ag stores carry it here.

He means don't pre-mix it and seal it in a bottle to store. Gas builds up and the container goes boom!!

A sure thing recipe.
Quart of hydrogen peroxide, 1/2 cup baking soda with 1/2 cup of Dawn liquid.
OR
Equal Water/vinegar, bottle of hydrogen peroxide, 1/2 cup of Dawn
