Good morning RTF.

New member here. Love the information on this site. I have a few questions and hopefully can be pointed in the right direction.

I have a 1year Black lab female that I have had pro trained. Hunted 37 days duck hunting and 12 days goose hunting this fall. She has been force fetched, e collar condition has all the basics down. I'm trying to teach her more but am struggling, this is my first lab.

I tried searching on here but didn't find exactly what I'm looking for.(operator error I'm sure)

What books or dvds should I invest in? I don't think I will run her in hunt tests but I would like to get her into some of that advanced training. Is this even possible for a guy who hasn't trained a lab before?

I am hopefully joining a club this spring so I will have some help I hope but I'd really like to start working on more now.

Thanks in advance,
Matt

I trained my first lab by myself. The biggest help I ever had was joining a club and going to training days. I also used Mike Lardy's Total Retriever Training. You can look into that or others out there like Fowl Dogs, the Bill Hillman or Dennis Voigt training videos I have heard great things about.

I'd go back to the pro and pick his brain.

Welcome Matt. Joining a training group is a great idea. About what training method it use, I would talk to your trainer. It would probably be more efficient to continue a system they may have started your dog on already. If that doesn't bare fruit, many here follow Lardy's Total Retriever Training.

Where are you located, Matt?
Joining a group or finding an experienced succesful mentor is your best option.
As far as training materials IMHO opinion the best option for newcomers is Mike Lardy's Vol 1 of his RJ articles. It takes you through basics and transition and beginning advanced work. It is concise and accurate and costs less than $30. Ckick on the window at the top of the page here for ordering info

Matt,
If you live in Southern Minnesota, Land of Lakes HRC Club is very active and has a good group of members. I think they have weekly training days.

Email was sent to trainer before I posted here.

I'm located in southern Mn.

The dog has more ability then I do, I feel like I'm doing her injustice. Comes from a very good blood line I believe.

As long as you like your pro I would say this is your best bet.
I more then welcome clients back for training. Even welcome non clients that want to learn to train their own dog. More than willing to help someone at no charge that will come out and help me. I have only had 1 or 2 guys ever do this. Even clients. Most drop off their dog and come back 3 or 4 months later to pick them up and expect to learn how to handle their dog in a matter of an hour. Some may come and see their dog once a month and just hang out but once they see their dog work they are gone. Pet peeve of mine, people want their dog trained but don't want to be trained their self and most need it more than the dog.

Really enjoyed the club training days. Everyone is at a different level. Work on specific aspect of training and build from there. You also get to see so many dogs run, it's like a seminar once a month.

I like Total retriever series and also recently picked up both videos with Danny Farmer and Judy Aycock. They were also excellent. Offer a lot of solutions to the most common problems.

Best of luck!!
