I used to like the Avery until I bought a Cabela's vest. Threw away the Avery before I even got my Cabela's vest. The fit on the Cabela's vest is far superior to the Avery, the velcro allows you to have it tight both in the waist, and chest, and also the neck when they are standing which is the most glaring problem with the Avery but the fit at waist isn't tight on them either. Can't speak for the Banded vest. I was dubious of the velcro on the Cabela's vest. I'm not anymore.

I like the Cabela's vest. Just bought at new Avery vest and they have reinforced the neoprene with nylon straps on the inside that don't stretch thus making small adjustments impossible. I ended up ripping out the reinforcement straps and it is ok but I still like the Cabelas vest much better. I also don't like the handle holes on the Avery... to me it kind of defeats the purpose of a vest by continuously letting fresh cold water into the vest (I had a wetsuit with a hole in it one time...not a good combo).

Cabela's vest fits my American Water Spaniel better than any others. They are also nicely made.

one other point...if the vest were to ever get hung up on something in the water, the Cabelas velcro would at least give the dog a fighting chance to rip out of the vest whereas with a zippered vest, there's no way.

I've had a bunch of them over the years. I just replaced my Avery vest (the one with the handle cut into it) this season. I didn't go back with another Avery because of the smell. When I got the Avery vest I had to soak it for weeks to get the horrific "Chinese rubber" smell out of it. Other than that it was a good vest. I've seen dogs come back from land retrieves without their velcro vest. I like a good zipper. This time around I bought a Hardcore vest. It is pretty good but I would prefer them to be longer. They don't reach very far back on the dog IMO. Contrast that with the Cabelas vest I tried on my dog which was so long that my dog would have been peeing up inside his vest whenever he had to go. "Fit" is going to vary from dog to dog. You definitely want a 5 mil vest IMO. I would try to see if I could try some on my dog. You can bring your dog inside Cabelas, Bass Pro and Dick's BTW and Dick's carries the Hardcore vest (at least in the bigger stores).
