Our male black lab pup is just past 4 months old. He is pretty well housebroken, going to the door to potty. However, he doesn't seem to have control over urination at times and will dribble urine as he is walking around the house. It seems as if he sometimes he realizes that it is happening and then gets a little freaked out and heads for the door. Other times it seems like he doesn't even know it's happening. When he goes outside to urinate, he does so normally with a strong stream and seems to empty his bladder completely.

I have read that this could be caused by a UTI of sorts but I don't believe that he has anything like that going on. I have also read about a potential birth defect that can cause this dribbling that occurs in Labs (as well as other breeds). I'm hoping that this is not uncommon and simply due to him not having complete control over the muscles that restrict urine flow yet and that he will grow out of it.

Anybody here had similar issues or advice about this issue?

Mine did the same at that age, he had a UTI. We got that cleared up, he still dribbled a little when excited but it has gone away now at 11mo. My vet said that some have that issue when young but most will grow out of it.

Is the dribbling constant or intermittent? Ectopic ureter is a possibility.

Once you've ruled out a UTI via your veterinarian, ask them if it may be something as simple as lack of tone. Proin can help. (just had a client puppy present with the same symptoms, and Proin did the trick while the puppy was outgrowing the problem) Ectopic ureter would be my next guess.

Is he dry at night in the crate? Easiest way to collect is follow him around with a soup ladle and put the urine in a clean jar.

I had exactly the same problem. And I knew that he was trying to hold it because when we got outside he would pee a storm. Weeks ago I brought in urine for urinalysis. Results---negative. I re-examined my housebreaking procedure. I limited his water. Also, no water after 7 PM. Bottom line is in the past three days he has not dribbled water. I think that what was happening was a combination of not having full control of his bladder and his excessive drinking of water which by the way has now decreased. Truth is I had never seen a pup urinate so much but this has passed.
