Best wishes your way Osmosis and Porter.
With summer approaching, I fear similar occurance with my 12.5 year old girl with LarPar... Had a scary night Tuesday with her, as well, though not as severe as Porters. Good luck with the surgery Tuesday, I hope he has no complications from surgery.-spoke with the surgeon about it on my girl, last summer, and decided it was not an option for us.
Hug your boy and think good thoughts...

I think the doctors were reluctant doing the surgery until he nearly died Thursday. If he can't go on a simple walk without fear of dying, what type of life is that? Especially considering he was hunting seven weeks ago. It sounds like we will have to be on top of aspiration post-surgery.

I am interested in knowing why some of you had dogs that were not eligible for surgery.

I simply decided, that the risk was too high. The surgeon told me that many didnt even walk out of the hospital , post surgery. That was the kicker-
My old gal, goes (until this past week) with me and the other dogs on a walk every night along the creek. barking at birds, sniffing where critters have been, Swimming, wallowing, etc... She loves it. If we did the surgery and she couldnt go, she would be miserable screaming in the house, etc, because I left her. She has been going daily her whole life. Combined that, with the aspiration pneumonia from eating or drinking, and the risk of dying before they even come home, I decided , nope. Keep her quality of life good as long as possible.
She had a scary episode this past week where she was literally gasping for air once we got down to the swimming hole on the walk . Never happened before that day--- I have access to the creek near the house so that she doesnt have to go on the big walk anymore, and that is maintaining her happiness. I will do for her what she wants and can handle. Best thoughts your way with Porter and his surgery on Tuesday.

Good luck with the surgery. I have 2 dogs with LP. One had the surgery and one did not. The dog with the tie back was only 9 when he had the surgery. He experienced a case of pneumonia last fall. It was serious but he recovered. He's 10 now and I think the surgery was a good thing for him.
The dog without the tie back will be 15 in 4 days. He was always running and jumping around before LP slowed him down 4 years ago. He has had some serious collapses but fortunately has recovered each time. Now he has learned to pace himself on walks but the nerve damage has caused his pace to slow as well. All in all both are happy dogs. We just have to be very careful with them. I believe LP is very common just not discussed openly.

My vet said the tie back would help but in Bears case there was so much nerve damage they advised against surgery. We were very careful kept a spray bottle of water in fridge and a fan by his cage towards the end it was hard for him to even go outside for a potty break. He did ok in the winter but first warm day was really hard on him. There is a yahoo Lp support group that has a lot of info.

Im so glad he's doing better. At this point you would have to do surgery or say goodbye, if he is this bad its really the only two options. My dog was not a candidate for it or I would have had it done anything to have a little more time with him. We had to say goodbye to our sweet Bear March 17...... Prayers will be coming your way.
Mine can't have the surgery but we keep him happy! Every morning he gets to be the one to put his leash on and walk to get the paper. Then around lunchtime he also gets to go get the mail. He thinks it is the best since he is the one going for a "walk" it does not matter to him that it is not a long walk. He cares that he got his walk!

Prayers sent your way

Surgery is tomorrow! I hope to document his recovery in hopes others can learn about Larpar. This seems to be very prevalent in our older labs, but not discussed a lot.
Good luck on the surgery! Wish it was an option for mine.

Prayers for Porter today

Any word on Porter?

Porter has a long road to a full recovery, but he is back home and resting comfortably. The dr said there is no reason he can't have that Full recovery. Thinking back to last Thursday when he was minutes/seconds from dying, and the wonderful care he received makes me tear up. I am also grateful for all of the messages, emails, texts, and prayers sent our way. This is such a great community! Thank you all so much!
