Yes, I saw my brother in law (who is a F & G biologist) throw a blanket over the trap, as apparently they don't 'blast' while undercover, then take it out onto his lake in his boat, tie a rope to it and lower it into the water and submerge it until drowned. I rode in the truck with him while the trap was moved (while under the blanket) from a neighbor's place where it was trapped, over to his lake. No problem.

Well thanks for the replies and thought of all those but I have the trap too well hidden in the tall grass to attempt this. Cant quite get a good enough view to go for a head shot and I know I'd get skunked up if I tried to cover it. Probably wait awhile for better light and maybe get a shot. I think a 22 would be too risky so I think I will try my .410 and keep my fingers crossed!

LOL....what ever you do DONT THROW the blanket over it, lay it slowly over the trap. Approach quietly talking softly to the skunk, tail comes up stop, tail goes down start approaching again. Most times it takes me a couple minutes to get one covered.

LOL is all I have to say.... ;-)

Steve,
Understand that shooting the skunk will cause the scent to go off.
Is there any way you can release the critter from the trap?
At any rate....good luck. :)

Done this more than once
Long pole with bent nail hooks the trap and drag it slowly out. ( next time have a rope tied to the trap and fastened to something else)
After dragging out the trap slowly put a plastic trap over the trap. Use the pole / string tied to atv and head to the creek. Get it all in the creek in a deep part
Go back the next day or so and recover
Good luck
Dk

Put on a black suit. Paint a white stripe down the back. A wig and lipstick would be good also. OH, soft music...

Truth is, I've done this several times. I've found that leaving the trap until mid afternoon helps (the little "stinker" will be groggy). Then the blanket or tarp can be lowered over the trap. keep the blanket between you and the skunk just in case.

What I don't recommend... Don't let the dog visit the trap. Skunks don't like the way dogs smell and feel compelled to change that.

This is actually my very first post. Just learning retriever training so I have been reading and learning from this excellent web site.

I do know about skunk removal as I have trapped many skunks. I set traps to remove mainly groundhogs from my farm, occasionally a skunk wanders into a trap. They have always sprayed themselves out overnight when they first get trapped. It takes them a few days to build up more spray, so you should be pretty safe. But still, take precautions. Wear a disposable rain suit, boots, gloves, hood and goggles. Get a disposable plastic tarp, carry it in front of your body and drop it on the cage. I don't have a problem with skunks so I just let them go by pulling the pin on the cage and dumping them out. They are usually in a bit of shock so they just stumble away.

Cleanup afterwards with hydrogen peroxide and baking soda and water mix, or just leave everything to air out.

Ken, I am shocked no one has suggested the Ken Bora removal system based on the pond clearing method. Before attempting this please google search Oregon whale removal fiasco!

Just trying to help in the worst way regards ( plagiarizing Bubba),

Jeff
