I have used Tri-Tronic e-collars for years and swore by them and I never experienced much or any time when I pressed the buttons that it didn't stimulate the dog. Now my e-collars don't seem to be very consistent with stimulating the dogs and it irritates me to no end. I'm considering purchasing a Dogtra the next time.

You might try repairing your TT ecollar by TT or Collar Clinic. Cost will be much less most likely. Which pickup is best? Probably several different opinions.

I have used Tri-Tronics for years. I recently purchased a new TT 550 from Collar Clinic. I was using the lower intensities on my young pup, and I checked it each day on my fingers. Some days I couldn't feel any stimulation with any of the 2 levels and used a low 3 level. The next time the 2's were higher intensity than the 3 had been the time before. This was not satisfactory for me. I was able to switch to a Dogtra RT and it is working consistently and I am very happy with it...

Not sure how experienced you are cubdriver, so forgive me if this sounds insulting as it isnt, but Ive found that more pressure on the prongs will get a hotter feel with the same setting. Could this have been the case?

I would have bought a dogtra except for the fact they don't have a tone button. I use tone as release on stand done marks so it is a must have for me. I bought the tt/garmin sport...not sure if I will use it as an ecollar yet...took the prongs out when I took it out if the package.

I have a SportDog 425 Wetland Hunter, it's what I saw in magazines, lol. And admittedly, I had no intention of getting into field training when I purchased it last fall. It's worked okay, but I've noticed this summer that sometimes she'll yelp like I've really burned her on the lowest setting, and sometimes she acts like it's not even on with a higher setting. The guy I train with uses TT and I like that there are low-med-high settings for each level, so I'm hoping to upgrade after Christmas.

a.curtin2011, The SD425 only has medium and high ranges. The SD1825 has low, medium, high. I learned this the hardway as the 425 on medium setting #1 was too hot for my pup. The 1825 is much better. I know SportDog gets a bad rap, but I like the 1825.

Dogtra Edge RT is the way to go. Was tRiTronics user for years... Once I switched, I'll never go back.

Here is a review I did a while back. Don't need a tone, the vibration works the exact same way.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but huntinman, can you tell me what you use the vibrating function for? I've got the collar but my pup is still young so it will be another couple months before I ever turn it on. I was just wondering the other day if I would ever use the vibrate function, and what I would use it for?

More than anything else I use it as a recall button when airing dogs so I am not constantly blowing a whistle or yelling at the dogs. Works just like the tone. The dog feels it and knows I want him to come back to me (based on the way I use it). Others may use it differently. Have also used it as a reminder when they are barking on the truck with a quiet command.

Thanks. That makes sense. The most common use I hear is for recall but I never really understood why because in my mind I thought you would always use "here" or the whistle for recall. However, it's logical to have the ability for a silent recall in case you are somewhere that you don't want to be yelling or blaring on a whistle like you mentioned. Appreciate the insight.

I know someone with the SD1825 that also really likes it. What I don't like about the SD425 is that while it has med and high, it's impossible to switch btwn quickly. You have to be set on one or the other.
I haven't written SD off, so to speak. When I broke down and bought a bark collar I went with SD. But I admit to being influenced by what I'm around, which is a lot of TT and Dogtra. :)
I appreciate your input, thanks!

We also use the tone button for recall and barking when needed. As young dogs they understand the tone very quickly. While travelling we often have to air dogs in campgrounds early in the morning and night and sometimes darkness. The tone button teaches a solid recall without loud and annoying whistles or voice. If our dogs don't recall on the tone, they know what correction is coming next. ;-)

I condition the dog to "Here" with vibrate so when its too far away to hear me I can use the vibrate and get the same result.
Same here plus when hunting upland the last thing I want to do is make any noise in the woods or field. Now that my older dog who is 12 is deaf I am glad he is conditioned to vibrate. Guess I went the opposite way of most. Had a Dogtra for about 10 years before the nick button started to stick, liked it enough that I replaced it with the 1900 2 dog collar system. Last year finally broke down and got the Garmin\TT Alpha and TT15, I am very pleased with it too.
