Two ways ... ultra-sound or palpation. The tuft of hair routine tells nothing. Don't believe everything you see on YouTube.

x2
Besides, all these little tricks you hear about, don't really work when you take into consideration that the bitch's body is going to prepare for pups whether or not she's actually pregnant. Some will even start to fill up with milk and go into false labor. For $60 get a vet (preferably one with experience) to do an ultrasound at 30 days and then you'll know.

Were you at in Indiana?? Come over to Cincinnati and I will do one for the cost of lunch!! Also remember it is the number of days since ovulation, not the actual breeding date.

witness relaxin test 30 days after ovulation has been accurate for me

THIS...

I have a bitch who was bred 1/13-1/17 . Ovulated on 1/15. One week ago ( 28 days from OVUL) , I was still wondering if she was or not-though I suspected. Within 3 days of THAT - she suddenly thickened up and now a week later- there is no question. I'd say you'll know in a few days for sure- When in doubt ultrasound- thats pretty sure if you have someone who knows what theyre doing-( I trust NateB does-take him up on this.:)

West of Indianapolis. If I had a free day I'd make the drive over to see you. I've heard of the palpitations, and untrasound, and xray the last week.

First tie was on Sunday afternoon, blood draw the following morning came back 7.4, second tie Tuesday morning. I think I see the changes enough to say she is pregnant. I will likely do the xray a week before just to know approximate count.

Thanks for the invite Nate. Are you coming to the indy Deer Turkey and Waterfowl expo next weekend?

Three ways, blood test for relaxin levels.

the first changes I usually see are a swelling of the areola of the nipple. I f I don't see pretty definite changes by 6 weeks , we are not usually pregnant. ( BUT may be with a singleton)

Ultrasound. But my girls usually vomit right about implantation time. Roughly 18 days post ovulation.

So noted. It's been 5 years since a breeding here and I guess I'm a bit behind.

a fourth way.....patience.

op quotes good numbers, especially for tuesdays tie. if the health and viability of dog and bitch are assumed, i think it's hard not to get puppies.

jj, worry about something you can control for two more weeks, let nature take its course and save your money! just my O.;-)

Like getting my tax prep done? Yeh, no stress there. :p

I see the signs I believe, sooner this time than 3 years ago, her 1st litter. My initial post was to spark ideas for what people look for when trying to assess without technology. It is interesting what responses and counter responses come up.

I'm not going to do anything til the last week, then xray for spine count. At least that's my plan for now.

:) you actually want to count skulls, not spines.

Corrected on the skulls, and the countdown start date. I knew that, but didn't say what I was thinking. :p

Not heard of the tuft of hair thing before. But funnily enough I just noticed it on my recently mated bitch! And today she was scanned/confirmed in pup!!

But what I have heard of, and do notice sometimes, is that the last couple of ribs tend to 'spring' out a bit in early stages. It's a very subtle change, but if you know your bitch well, you can usually detect it. It is perhaps this spring of rib that makes the flank hair knot stand out (although I have genuinely not seen that sign until this time, when it was very apparent).

I count both and make every skull align with a spine. You may see a spine that may lead you to a skull that you did not initially see.
Yes me too...:) usually counting skulls first and then seeing they each have a spine, then finding wayward spines

We stopped by the Vets office on our way to work this afternoon, to weigh in. 70.6lbs with 15 days to go. She has gained 10.2lbs so far. Vet is going to be in Vegas next week, so we will hold out doing the Xray until March 15th, when he gets back. That is 5 days before due date.

Do any of you have reason to be concerned doing an Xray that close to due date? I ask for precautionary reasons, as I don't want to jeopardize anything for convenience.
