Well after the dove shoot this afternoon, I decided to pitch one to my 10 week old Midas. Thinking he'd probably push it around a bit and then spit it out, because of all those feathers. Only that ain't what happened. I tried to get him excited, channeling Bill Hillman, and he went to fetch it up. Wow, I thought. The mouth full of feathers didn't discuss our age him at all! Then it happened. He started running away with it and eating it. How am I going to stop this behavior in the future?

Answer previously. See post dated 8-9-16 on Boykin puppy. I don't know how to copy a thread on my iPhone.

When you watch Hillmann or Lardy, etc. don't improvise.

Boykin Puppy, first bird, chomped down and wasn't giving it up.

Wasn't really improvising, just trying to get pup excited about the bird. Didn't even seem interested at first toss. And he is crazy about fetching up stuff. First time I've ever had a puppy eat a bird out of 5.

What I'm calling improvising is 1. Using a dove rather than pigeon; & 2. Doing it at 10 weeks vs. 12 weeks or water ever age Hillmann does it but after some other stuff.

It appears that if you were following the program closely, this wouldn't have happened. Thus to the question you asked about fixing it, I say just follow the program.

I always Improvise .
So a sock or netting over the dove or pigeon has always been my 'Introduction' . ..Just in case.
Call me old fashioned
Well how'd that work out for the OP?

I guess if the OP likes how it went, they'll keep doing it, I'm just saying what I'd do - or not do.

Me Too!
Just saying how I prevent it ;)

Y'all can argue over it, but after making doves the first hunt for the first half dozen or so of my dogs, those since have enjoyed a season of larger birds to further condition good game handling habits before getting to retrieve a dove, rail or snipe. Guess you could say my stance on young dogs, much less little pups, and doves was changed in a single gulp. And that dog had handled a truckload of training pigeons without incident.
