Im going to start training with a group of people and going to hunt test. What is the best kind of crate or kennel for open bed truck for the summer time. Dont want to spend more than 250 or 300 dollars. He is a large lab, right around 100 pounds. I want something that has good ventilation and stays cool. thanks.

Add another 0 to your don't want to spend and you'll have your hearts desire.

Remember he said

Unless it is going to be well ventilated and in the shade a regular box can kill a dog due to exceive heat.

Outside in the summer heat would mean a well built insulated box with a large fan system.

Going rates on these depending on options are $1000.00 to $2000.00 per hole.

For that price range you will have to build it yourself. I have built a couple different ones for myself using 3/4" plywood and galvanized trim. The one I have now has small fans running off of a Marine battery. I am building a new one this summer and plan to use the automotive readiator fans that someone posted here to move the air. It stays cool enough even during the heat of summer. If you are good with a skil saw, router, and tin snips its not too hard. They are definetly heavier than an aluminum box. If you take your time they can look pretty good especially trimmed out in metal properly. If you want some pictures of what I have now I can take some, it may give some ideas though I will be changing a few things on the next box.

Will the dog be in that while you are driving the truck? If so, I would advise against it. It offers no protection in the case of an accident.
We have always just used strapped down vari-kennels. Once we arrive at our destination, we try to find a shady spot to park and add a frozen 2 liter bottle of water and attach a crate fan.
I guess we're kinda cheap

I agree, that is nothing more than a wire fence. Before we got the dog truck, I used a vari-kennel with crate fans. On really hot days (97 degrees at Fox Valley last summer), I too used the frozen liter soda bottles. The other thing to consider is some kind of sun shade. I used to haul the dogs around in my SUV, so it was easy to rig up windshield sun shades and reflective metallic solar blankets over the rear hatch to create a tent-like effect. You'd have to do a little more rigging for an open bed pickup, but I found that creating shade made a huge difference in the overall comfort for the dog.

Use the search function and find the thread on hot weather and running dogs. I think it was Dr Nate that had an excellent post on performance dog care in extreme heat. Worth reading in addition to what your considering doing as far as transporting your dog.
