In my opinion, each of us who participates in the Field Trial Game, has an obligation to protect it.

In this particular situation, anyone who witnessed the verbal abuse could have filed a compliant. This includes:

- Contestants;
- Observers; and
- Members of the Field Trial Committee

Nothing in the Rules precludes a member of the FTC from filing a complaint over misconduct that the member has personally observed.

I was not there, but was told that the person in question - among other things - called one of the judges a racial epithet.

If true, and if
- No one filed a complaint
or if a complaint was filed and the Field Trial Committee took no action

Then shame on those people who stood by and did nothing.

My point is:

I feel it’s primarily the clubs responsibly to sanction the bad actors and this is not happening.

The club does not sanction the bad actor ... the AKC does.

The Process is this

1) Someone files a written complaint
2) The FTC conducts a preliminary investigation to determine whether - if proven - the charges would constitute prejudicial conduct
If no, nothing further happens (although report must be made to AKC)
3) If FTC decides that conduct - if proven - would constitute prejudicial conduct, then hearing is conducted
4) FTC hears testimony of witnesses
5) FTC must then decide if
a) Alleged misconduct was proven;
b) Whether the misconduct was prejudicial to the sport;
c) Whether the misconduct occurred in connection with, or during, an event
6) FTC then sends its findings to AKC
7) AKC decides upon sanctions

but the FTC does have the power (if the criteria are met) to immediately suspend the individual, then the case goes to AKC for final dispensation

If the person is found guilty as charged after a proper hearing, their suspension is immediate. They can appeal their suspension, but they must appeal to the AKC, not the committee. Usually, the AKC allows them to proceed as normal while their suspension is under appeal, unless the reason for their suspension is particularly egregious.

The AKC decides for how long and if a fine will be added to the time.

Say what you want, but their are consequences...
Even if the abandonment part isn't true, this thread would not have begun if there weren't some sort of untoward behavior that had occurred that wasn't dealt with.

Unless people stand up and protect the sport, the consequences won't happen....and it would be a shame for something awful to come from someone else's inaction.

Let me leave this discussion with this observation. I have personal knowledge (I was there...) of a situation where someone was charged with assaulting the event chairman. There were written charges, witnesses, testimony, and a guilty verdict. The AKC suspended this person for two years. A series of events followed that culminated some months later with the suspended person dying of a massive heart attack. It was widely thought that the subsequent series of events was triggered by the initial suspension. The truly sad part of this whole situation, aside from the person's untimely death, is that apparently they could/should have been charged with misconduct and suspended at least one other time prior to the last one, but for whatever reason they weren't. Had that earlier suspension gotten the person's attention and put their attitude right, perhaps they'd be alive today.

We're not doing anyone, or the sport, any favors by not taking responsibility for protecting the sport. I guess for some it's easier to make excuses than to show some courage.

Actually their apparent bad temper and lack of self control probably is what lead to the heart attack.

The end result of the his suspension and its collateral effects led to more crap than I would ever wish on anyone. The ripple effect was like that of a tsunami. That is what killed him.

If we ever meet, I'll tell you "the rest of the story."
