A Grant Parish man who has overcome some big obstacles in life was honored with a major award today for what he loves doing. The Master National Retriever Club Foundation presented Bill Autrey with the "Bill T. Teague Handler of the Year" award. Autrey received the award because of his expertise in training and handling of retrievers, along with his faith and his will to overcome physical adversities. Autrey lost his larynx due to cancer and trains his dogs through hand signals and a special whistle he uses. This award is the highest level honored within the foundation.

Here is what Bill Teague, President of Master National Retriever Club Foundation, had to say, "He could have been a whoa me, oh my goodness how poor I am. Just the opposite, he has moved on, he has conquered this illness, he is doing what he is supposed to do, which is one of the reasons he is such an inspiration. So, we see a lot of similarities between the standards and Mr. Autrey's performance as a human being, which is one of many reasons why we admire him, respect him, and love him."
At the award ceremony in Bentley, people from 16 states made the trip to congratulate Autrey and his accomplishments.

Congratulations to Bill....Not only a great trainer/handler but also a great man... He's a gentle man with gentle ways and always takes the time to welcome you. I would hope that he'd take the time in the future to share his knowledge and experiences in a book, it would be a great read.;)

Wow - what an amazing man!

Congratulations. We met Bill for the first time this Summer in Minnesota and again at the MN when he came up to my wife and me greeted us with a big smile. I was nervous being at my first MN and looking around at the opening ceremony looking for someone I recognized and Bill if you read this, it really meant a lot that you remembered us and took the time to come over to visit with us. Congrats again.
