I know that a good majority of the users of this site wouldn't even consider buying a pup off of a Hunt Test dog, but lets just say that you were going to get a pup from a H.T. dog which dogs do ya'll like? Or just tell me some of ya'lls favorite dogs to watch run,non Field Trials.

My yellow dog Pete.

Why settle for a Ford when you can get a Mercedes for the same price??
If I like the dog & have had the opportunity to see him run and the owners just happen to be HTers and the dog has a decent pedigree and clearances-I wouldn't feel shortchanged getting a pup from an MH sire.

Some people might be more comfortable driving that Ford

I picked this dog to sire my latest litter.

There are lots of nice MH/GRHRCH dogs out there.

Oh-a couple MH dogs (you said dogs-not bitches) I always liked to watch-Frank Prendergast's (sp) "Major" & David Butler's "Timber". And both the McGirrs and Sadler's always had nice dogs running in Master.

Haven't we determined that certain FC dogs wouldn't make good HT dogs in some of the previous threads. With this in mind. If you were looking to run HT only, maybe you would rather have that Ford F250 instead of your Mercedes SUV.

Sometimes in hunting and HT it isn't how smooth the ride is. But rather, how well does it hold up to the abuse of constantly being driven off roads.

What if you could get a dog that had all the qualities of a Ford F250 and drove like a Mercedes? That was my thinking when I got my latest pup out of FC FTCH AFTCH Taylorslab Magic Trick MH CD. How sweet he is looking so far!

just my opinion but sometimes it seems like in AKC hunt test alot of the dogs are sired by FCAFC parents or atleast FT dogs and in the UKC alot of them are sired by other HT dogs like GRHRCH and MH.I may not be right but just seems that way.....What about GRHRCH Roux?Arent there some dogs with Vegge in the name?

Maybe, but you aren't talking about buying a field trial dog that's been groomed for field trials for 5 or 6 years. You are talking about buying a puppy out of a dog that has the capability to do anything in the retriever game. So I would have to stick to the mercedes for the same price.

This is one of my babies' daddy. I don't know about all of his other offspring, but the one I have is a marking fool with drive through the roof. I think with a better trainer she could do it all.

We bred to Mike Osteen's dog, E-Z's Mikey Likes It MH. We really like the dog--he is all-around solid in drive, talent, and exceptional training attitude. We know perfectly well, having trained some, that there are successful field trial dogs that don't have the set of traits we want in our puppies. Mikey does. He also has an interesting pedigree, being sired by FC-AFC Topbrass Tornado, a Zip Code son.

That a dog can make FC without, perhaps, being thoroughly at home in the water or having a never-say-die training attitude, or being aggressive or whatever, is not a knock on field trials and is certainly not meant to imply that some other venue does a better job of selecting quality dogs. John and I believe, however, that breeding for the traits we want is a lot better bet than breeding for titles alone.

Next breeding we are looking at a dog of Tom Lehman's who, as far as I know, has no titles at all. Lots of Harley in the pedigree, lots of go power, talent, and terrific attitude.

The Mikey pups are keepers at 3 1/2 months....

You just had to start didn't you Russ?
I think a better analogy would be to compare a F-150 to a F-350. We won't even mention Chevy or Dodge here
No matter what I have planned for my dogs ( HT, FT, or hunting) they are coming from FT stock. You can still shop for specific traits among that stock.
From what I have seen I think the perfect stud for an all around HT gun dog would be Watermarks the Boss. Maybe even a FT prospect if breed to the right bitch. My Petey is a Boss pup he is the favorite of my three.
Got 2 FT prospects coming, one Friday and one late August. Haven't had a puppy in three years! I can't wait.

isnt it how there trained and raised as to what venue they will exceed in.
I don't believe so. I'm not saying that you couldn't take a lot--or even most FC's and get a MH type dog. However, is a fire breather that is trying to jump over holding blinds and runs like a grey hound the dog I want to do 100 yard marks and honer. Probably not. This dog would be better suited to the FT game IMHO.

Once again. I would much rather have a pup out of PARENTS that have proven that they can do it all. Such as, a sire who is FC/AFC MH. And a dam that is QAA MH with possibly some derby points.

so are you saying that alot of these fire breathing Fc AFC wouldnt be MH or great HT dogs had they been trained that way since a pup and never been in the HT game?It goes both ways, there are dogs running only Ht that had they been in Ft training since puppy they would possibly be Fc AFC. Like they always say alot of FT washouts go on to be MH but not very many MH washouts go on to run FT game..JMO

I'm with you, Amy. I select a sire to produce the best puppies I can produce. Sometimes that sire is an FC-AFC, sometimes he's QAA, sometimes a MH and sometimes no title at all. I have a young dog that might be the best dog I've ever had and her sire isn't titled. Here are a few that we have used and will be using in the near future.

Sheriff, have you ever been to a field trial? You might want to check it out before you make statements like the one above. I can guarantee you will see just as much of that kind of undesirable behavior at a hunt test as at your average field trial.
