Wildfires in San Diego have burned over 100,000 acres in less than 24 hrs. Many of the retriever community are among the 250,000+ citizens that have been evacuated from their homes that are in the projected path of the fire. Lots of homes have already burned. Tankers and helicopters cannot be used because of high winds gusting to 70mph.

The Sheriff has stated it is worse than Cedar fire of 2003 which burned 2300 houses and took many lives.

Just saw the piece on the NBC news. This is devastating. The Carr side of my family all lived in California and one of my uncles collected planes & volunteered on weekends either in the fire tower or using one of his planes to fly chemical runs on fires. I don't remember a fire as damaging as this one-although maybe it's the fact that news coverage brings home the details so much more graphically.

My heart goes out to these folks. I hope the loss of life (that goes for pets & livestock) is small.

This is bad and getting worse. There are now at least 6 members of the San Diego Retriever & Field Trial Club who have had mandatory evacuations. Unfortunately this now includes Arnie and Linda Erwin who’s home was lost in the Cedar fire 4 years ago and Linda’s parents, Bill and Dewey Jenkins. They just posted a voluntary evacuation for areas within 1 mile of my home here in Chula Vista. Am hoping the winds don’t pick up again tonight allowing the Harris fire to move on to the coast. If they do I will be joining the others in attempting to find a safe place. So far, all people and dogs are safe. No one has lost a home yet, but property has been damaged.

Susan thanks for posting. I have been checking addresses in trail catalogs and looking at a map trying to figure out how close this is to you and Arnie and Linda. It isn't very clear to me here in Arizona. Also e mailed Mary Ellen but no response as yet.I pray the winds let up and that you and all the others stay safe and don't loose your homes.

I think Mary Ellen's house will be OK. It was surrounded by the Cedar Fire 4 years ago. Currently she is in Oklahoma at the Chessie Specialty.

Thanks Russ & Florence. I had gorgotten about the Chessie Specialty. I pray you will all be fine. Marie

There are at least 8 fires now burning in San Diego County. The most damaging so far is the Witch fire near Escondido. It has jumped west of I-15 into Ranch Bernardo and is threatening Rancho Sante Fe and the coast. Bruce evacuated to Hemet last night and as of noon today his house was ok. Mary Ellen is at the Chessie Specialty in Oklahoma so she is ok. The fire is approaching Crest but so far Arnie and Linda are ok. Russ and Florence should be safe. Here in the southbay there is fire to the south and the east. I-15 is closed to traffic and I-5 is a parking lot. Those are the only north-south routes. So guess I will head to the beach. My Firefly is sticking close and the Moose is safe with Carol K. Lynn's Rio is also safe with Carol.

Here's hoping the winds die down very soon.

Jeff

Russ...hope you and yours are still ok. My in-laws are in Solana Beach (on the Rancho Santa Fe end of town), and it's not pretty right now. They're ok for now. We're in Ventura County and, apparently like you, are at the beach...but it's really nasty here, too. My son and his family are in a rural area pretty close to where "our" fire is headed, so we're all "standing by to stand by" to help move them off their property if necessary.

Y'all take care...our prayers are with you, and with all of us.

Keep us posted.
We were just wondering how Linda and Arnie were doing. I said there is no way they could get hit twice.
I hope I'm right.

We attended an event at Rancho Santa Fe in 2004.
Gorgeous place.....I hope it survives.

Take care you guys.......

Devlin,

Parts of Solana Beach are evacuated and all of Del Mar. My Mom lives at the beach in Del Mar and just got the knock on the door.

Linda and Arnie also just got the mandatory evacuation, but I think the fire will go to the north of them.

MCAS Miramar is evacuating which is 4 miles to the northeast of us. The fire is in Rancho Sante Fe right now. Some homes have been lost but many have been saved. The RSF Fire Dept is a great one. Hopefully they can prevail over the high winds and dry eucalyptus trees.
