i had this in another thread but it went off topic quick so here is the ?

what is the average cost of dogs is different levels of training / competition / age, M or F
master, derby, QAA, open, etc. buy cost i mean selling price not how much to campaign a dog

i would go check the started dog section. there are some MH and other started dogs for sale. sounds like for a good started dog with a MH or field trial title around 3500-6500

Starting at a grand all the way up to hundreds of thousands. I think I read once good pedigree and you could sell a derby dog at the rate of a thousand a point. Heard a rumor of a young golden QAA that sold for over 50. I also thought a FC lab sold for as cheap as 20not long ago. I must be stupid I would not sell any of mine for any amount. I have thought about shooting them or giving them away sometimes.

To quote LVL I would say it depends.

lots of varietys. A started dog ready to run some seniors and hunt and has a good pedigree will run around 4K. A started dog that is a field trial propsect, well bred, ready to run derbies or finishing derbies, with health clearances will be priced at least 6K, more likely 7 to 8K. A finished hunting dog will be at least 5K. A dog with lots of derby points, finishing Quals, maybe QAA and ready for AA will be well, well over 12K.

These are just some generalizations, lots of factors go into price including the health of dog in question, the pedigree, among others.

    ???

Define "started".

I don't think most would call a MH, HRCH, QAA, AFC, or FC a started dog.

Opinions vary but I agree with you on FC's and AFC's, they're no longer started.

A QAA'd dog or a MH might just be starting out on a field trial career. They would certainly not be considered "finished," but well started.

Depends on what you want your finished dog to do.

I would consider these started dogs...

I don't know about you Howard, but I wouldn't sell my started dog for cheap.:)

I've got 11.5K in my started dog who is NOT FOR SALE

i run only HT so a MH to me is finished.
so to me a started dog is forced, CC, running t-pattern possibly running doubles.. thats a started dog to me. but thats me

Only 11.5k??? I'm afraid to figure out how much I have into my "started" dog, which is also NOT FOR SALE - okay for the "right" price I might entertain the offer ;)

You wouldn't really sell him would you Lainee? Even if someone offered you a lot of $$$? I wouldn't entertain an offer on mine for 2 seconds, but then I don't think too many folks are chompin' at the bit for a JH, WCX!! :)

If the price was right, but don't worry no one is beating a path to my door with any offers so Butthead will still have his snuggle spot on the bed when he gets back home! :D Oh wait, FT dogs are suppose to sleep out in the kennel, right? ;)

....so, what would you take for an offer, "M" ? :) I could be there fairly soon to pick up.. ! LOL

A LONG time ago, I made the mistake of putting pen to paper and figuring out how much I had "invested" in this sport. Then, I made the mistake of trying to compare that with what I had to show for it.

I'll not be making that mistake again.......ever..............................

If it weren't for some of the people I've met and some of the places I've been because of my association with retrievers, I'd have packed it in a loooooong time ago........

I know of several young (2-3 year old) dogs that sold for between 10-20k. Not on derby list, not QAA, but well bred, and with lots of potential.
