i'm thinking i may go started for my next dog purchase. i am just curious how hard it is(i know not recommended) to change say a 10 months old name? i prefer not to go to the launch tell my dog to come and have 5 other dogs as well because of the common name.(teal, remi, beretta, drake, etc...) not to offend anyone.....thanks

Easy, just link the two names together. Example...Old name: Remi New name: Tex Start by linking the two names together such as calling "RemiTex" Eventually drop the Remi.

I used the same concept at Labs R Us but just a bit different in timing. My dog was named "Panda". I changed her name to "Socks". She was coming to it in a matter of two days. I'd call Panda and when she started I'd simply say, "Good girl Socks" Said that several times the first day. The second day I just started calling "Socks". The couple times she didn't seem to understand, I reverted to the first day call.

Funny thing though. I just called "Panda" and she came racing to me. Guess the breeder's name stuck and that was 18 months ago. Still, she's very solid on "Socks".

I did not chain the dogs old name to the new name. I never used it at all. He was an adult, middle-aged Chesapeake Bay Retriever. His original call name was Toby. I changed it to Scooby-Doo. I used treats, bacon and played fetch releasing him on the new name. It took about an afternoon.

I used to do rescue and often I'd get a dog and have no idea what the dogs name was. Sometimes the shelter would name the dog and I'd either keep that name or not. Doesn't take too long for them to learn a new name. Another issue was getting a dog that had the same name as one of mine. I got a Ginger and already had a Ginger. I changed the new Ginger to Gigi and she would come to that and ignore my call for Ginger within a couple of weeks. I kept Gigi (and Ginger) because Gigi was 10 when I got her and no one wants to adopt an old dog. The dogs read you and know who you are talking to and learn quickly.

Cinch,

14 month old Springer named "Missie" came in to the kennel; I already had a Springer "Chrissie", so didn't want any confusion with the sibilants. Didn't bother chaining, she just became "Milie". Took no time at all; in a couple of weeks I could cast her by name out of a group.

She was a rescue (gentleman was in very poor health) and when I'd trained her on a bit I gave her to a forester mate as a shooting / beating dog. Never a problem with him either.

Seriously though..’
:)
If you really think about it,, why do you think it necessary to proceed a command with the dogs name..

Fido , here,, Fido sit…?? Why not just Here,,and Sit?

I am sure some will bring up a HT where you send your dog on a Mark with its name.. Send your dog on a Blind with Back.. ect..
When I first started running HT,, MOST people sent their dog, whether it be for a Mark, or Blind on “Back”.. A few people sent on the dogs name on marks,,but very few..
As things changed, and people sent on dogs names (Marks),, and BACK became a word a dog MUST obey! (used on Blinds),,It was always Odd to me that a certain Pro trainer (if he was present at that test) would ALWAYS proceed me in the order in Honor situation part of tests,,and Many times During marking set ups with out the Honor.. I came to know him pretty well. I was always nervous,, and he would help at the line talking and making it more like a days hunt.. Kinda became friends .( Last sentence was in respect to him just in case I am assuming ...I said KINDA!)

Anyways I asked him one day,, how it always works out with the order, that he is there with me.. He told me to sit down….. He said” people think you ae a circus act at the line!,, You send your dog on back,,and you Beller it at the top of your lungs! Folks don’t want to run with you cause they think your BACK command will cause their dog to break!” J I was Mortified! I had no clue..
In times he wasn’t at the same tests,, Some poor soul had to run before, and after me,, no dogs broke when they were at the line with me,,except of couse,, mine. (well sometimes my dog just wouldn’t GO! )

There is no reason to proceed a command with your dogs name.. If they are at distance,, train to come to you on the whistle.. If you are around a situation where a lot of dogs are loose, and off leash,, keep Your dog on a leash… A soft command while they are at your side ,,that the dog obeys,, is all you need.. Leash your dog when its not working,, no matter how well you think its trained..

If you just don’t like the name the 10 month old has been given,, of course its not hard to change it.. But I doubt if there are a dog a two with the name RALPH,, and all the dogs are loose and out of control,,if you say Ralph “COME” (here) It will be amazing if YOURS obeys.. J
Worry about a high standard and compliance to a single command.. SIT, Here, Heel,,And BACK.. about all you need..
JMHO.

I send my dog for marks on her name.. I send her on Blinds on back.. Both instances,, Generally,, the command isn't very loud.. I mean the dog is right next to
you.. at your feet..
If two dogs are at the line,,with the same call name,, and 1 of them is Honoring. If the owner of the honor dog is worried their dog will break when working dog is sent on the same name,, They have more issues than what they are worrying about..

I send on the dogs name for marks. The volume of and how the command is givien is a Q. Very soft on close and or easy marks. Louder and lonnnnger and more difficult and long marks. Never loud enough to be interpreted as a reprimand.
On blinds at the line back is just back, run straight until I whistle.

I've always looked on you as a singular man, but some of us work a plurality of dogs.

I'd hazard a guess that outfitters in the US often have more than one dog working, and in UK and much of France, Spain and Europe generally you almost certainly will, wether flushers or retrievers or both together, at the same time, concurrently simultaneously and all at once. So you need to differentiate in Jack, Eddie, Louis, Chris, Ross, Millie's and Uncle Tom Cobbleighs mind who is supposed to be doing what. Clearly this doesn't apply to you, a chap with one dog so what you say is right for you, but it isn't the same for a lot of other folk.

Below, Heather Bailey doing a training demo of what I mentioned earlier, casting a dog by name out of a group at remote sit. It is a discipline I train for and so do others. Remember the "Hall Rule" videos?

The alternative ......

Blimp! Gawd help me!

My reference to when dogs are loose, was in reference to OP's talk about the "Launch" (lunch")…
Of course when training or around other dogs that are trained,,and have responsible owners,,Off leash has a more lenient consideration.

At a public area that has several dogs "Loose" that you know nothing about, and can observe the lack of discipline the owners have,, My TRAIINED dog goes on leash,,without a second thought.. I trust her uneqivically,, (I cant spelt)…

I know nothing about the other mongrels,,and mongrel owners at boat launches, Burger joints, home centers or gawd helpus all,, public dog Parks.. Stiches are expensive! I aint buyin them..

I dont allow my dog to "Play" (with other dogs I don't know..)

usually,, nothing good comes from it...

I am an ass in public if a dog I don't know, is off leash,,and headin our way,, and the owner yells,, "Can My dog say "HI" and Play"

The language is really bad..

Gooser , Bless your heart.
At your heel or further afield,,, whilst sight hounds are straight out the trap or retrievers finding 'ducks' .
I have found ..the name doesn't mean much anyway .....until you add the language of sign . ..to that individual who is autistic . (smiley happy face , thingy)

Colonel Blimp!
To you!,,,, " My Liege" (Curtesy,,and tipping my brim)

To Polmaise!:

I cant Understand a friggin thing you say!! ")")")")")")") :):):)

But your Vid is great!!! That Tail waggin dog is a stud! :)
Now,,, Put down your Lager or Ale,, what ever you guys call it.. (I call mine mountain Dew) and just use your imagination..
In your vid,, you just walked out and threw the three marks.. As you were walking back,, those wonderful dogs noticed who you waved at,,and behaved wonderfully ,,,,, but,, Imagine the guy off camera is named BuBBa!! and his dog came crashing over to you and he yells,, "if he mounts one a your dogs ,,its best to just let him finish,,

Then you see him throw his empty, low rent bud light can into your lush "Moore", that's so beautifull ,,as he belches....

His dog begins to chew a chunk of neck off one of your dogs just for fun!! The guys says.. "They'll straighten it out,, leave em be...

What I do:

I immediately put my dog on a leash And tell her to put her cute tushie on the ground... When Bubba's dipshit dog arrives,, I do my best to kick its teeth it.. (Bless his heart! :) I make reference to his (Bubbas) Mothers Line breeding!! Bless her heart!!

Regards

Gooser
