This morning I started teaching two of my dogs to kennel into a half a Vari kennel like Bill Hillman does. One of them runs in the kennel so fast she makes it go slipping and sliding across concrete or snow.

I am going to put some foam matting in the bottom inside. That will be a little bit more weight but I need to slow it from sliding because she jumped in it so fast one time, she sent it careening over the yard and starting down a hill.

Any ideas on something I could glue or spray on the bottom to prevent it from sliding? Don't want to spend a kajillion dollars. We use mats in yard work but, as Hillman says, the half kennel is a lot easier to see from a distance in the field.

Well you could spike it to the ground with tent stakes. But once immobile the dog will just burst through or jump over the back of the half kennel.
Or....
Don't use a half kennel at all. Use a board. Teach "place".
It's more better than kennel, in my opinion.
Kennel puts a dog in a kennel. Place puts a dog anyplace you need it to be.

I backed mine into a hole in a large tree. But he still slipped badly taking off out of it. I think training the place board is the better way. Dog learns when and where to put on the brakes.

Instead of dragging a half kennel out to train, I made a square out of 3/4 inch PVC. Made it to come apart if needed. In the two back corners I put a 3 way corner piece with a screw in part pointed up, and add two 18 inch pvc pieces sticking up with black tape at the top. Super light and easy to move around, and CHEAP. I taught my pup in a day to get inside the rectangle, no wobbliness, slipping, just normal traction. On the second day I set the rectangle down and he immediately jumped into it. Since then I have transitioned to a electric fence post with a streamer, and they will "kennel" right next to it. Best addition to training I have made is send back marks.

Excellent idea! I just happen to have some 3 way corners and some extra PVC pipe! Going to make this tomorrow.

This send-back stuff will also help me exercise my dogs. My one dog thinks it is a great game! Thanks to all who have mentioned or explained these marks.

Use a white 5 gallon buckets to store your bumpers. Set it down and tell dog to sit then "place" or "kennel" or whatever your command is. Your place can be anywhere in the field you want
