Dr. Ed can dogs have this issue with out the "lipstick" being out?

I mean that in a serious policially correct way too.

Well now that sounds like he might have gotten an infection inside the sheath? or possibly even a spider bite in a bad place. Anyway please let us know what the vet says and recommends.

The vet called back and said to bring him in this afternoon to rule out infection or injury. I will post what I learn, even if its that I am an idiot.

Carol-

I'd much rather see somebody put their dog first. Nobody would pick on you if they really thought this was serious, so I hope you get to post up that he's just fine.

Then I can tell you the story of Finny and his favorite stuffed animal dog...

..oh-never mind! :)

Actually I have found a way to prevent this problem as well as peeing on every tree in all my dogs. Anyone care to know the secret??? Aw heck I'll tell you anyway, it's called "only own female dawgs".

In the case that it is still out mineral oil works sometimes the skin folds in and it can't retract back inside the sheath. Mineral oil and a gentle massage works every time. My daughters 11 lb Schnauzer is always trying to breed my 104 lb lab and this happens all the time to him. ( I read that if it stays out to long it can cut off blood supply and be dangerous)

When the penis is stuck in the "outie" position, it is called paraphimosis. One of the reasons that this happens, especially in fluffy dogs, is that there are longer hairs at the opening of the dog's sheath that get tucked back into the sheath as the penis begins to retract. If it is already a little dried out, the hair sticks and locks it in the outie position, and it will need a little help/lubrication to return it to it's normal position. If your dog has long hairs near his sheath opening, the easiest thing to do is keep them trimmed short. That being said, it doesn't sound as if Indy has paraphimosis, and hopefully we'll get a diagnosis to his problem this afternoon and "little Indy" will be ok.

I don't think you are an idiot for caring about your dog Carol. Let's hope it isn't anything serious.

No one thinks you're an idiot for caring about your dog, it's just a funny topic, especially after the well-read testicle thread... :D

So, if I understand this, the cure is to take a little baby oil or similar lubricant, apply it to your dog's privates, and massage gently. Hmmm:rolleyes::rolleyes: If I expose myself that way I get thrown in jail.

Gonna make the "what are you in for" question DANG interesting.

Prolly just claim I murdered the wife regards

Imagine what the jail time would be like if they caught you helping out "Fido"

Sorry Carol,I really am hoping an waiting for good news from you.

Just got back from the vet, and I am sure glad we got in there. Indy has a raging sheath infection and the swelling and inflammation was compressing the urethra, causing the little "spurts" of pee when the crisis occurred last night. Anyway, the out look is good, he will be on antibiotics for 10 days and have to indure a couple of uncomfortable "flushing" procedures each day for a week. Also I have to collect a urine sample to take back tomorrow for further testing as they did not want to put him through catheterization (sp?) due to the swelling. As to the cause of all this, some of you are going to remember another embarassing thread I started last year about the difficulty of taking "decent" pictures of my dog, as his manhood is on display everytime he sits. Yep, when he sits and lets it all hang out, he brings in dirt and debris. Why does this happen? Because the pistol he is packing is to big for the holster! So after we get this cleared up I can look forward to a lifetime of weekly "privates" baths:-( Gawd, I always knew I did not want to be a nurse.

At any rate, even though we are going to lose a week of training, and have to go back for a check up next week, I think he will be fine. Just remember this as one more example of what these dogs will work through. Even though I had a niggling feeling that he wasnt 100% for the last couple of days, he ran like the freight train he always is. On Saturday we were running long long set ups, and he never slowed down. He had to have been in some discomfort then. Trust your instincts, a dog never can tell you, and we owe them everything.

Thanks to the ones of you that sent the PM's and ideas. They were appreciated.

Carol,

It only goes to show you that RTF can not replace a in person Vet visit....glad to hear Indy is doing good.....also glad none of my boys have issues like poor Indy!

Hey Carol glad that Indy's going to be fine after his antibiotics. I don't envy you playing "nurse" but what we do for our dogs!;-)
