I saw my 1st field trial in 1982. I had trained several gun dogs prior to that, but that was the day the world opened up. I had several good dogs in the late '80s but stopped trialing to raise kids. Now I'm back with a good young derby dog and a brand new one on the way next week.

1997 started with ukc hunt test and will progress to my first derby in a couple weeks.
If its not a passion you probably will not stay long, no different than the "one" golf shot that keeps you coming back to the course time after time.

I got my first Lab at 12 (family pet) -- tried training her using James Lamb Free -- didn't work out -- years later, in early 80s got into FTs and had several dogs over next 12 or so years -- left the game for nearly 15 years -- got back into it 2+ years ago when I bought my current dog, BLM Maxx -- run FTs because I like the competition and love training/handling dogs

Since 1990. A Golden named Heather was the start. Still miss her.

Ran my first sanction trial puppy stake with a Golden June 1964 and then became the Amateur Trained and Handled queen or the old Hunting dog stake with her. Got my first "real dog" in 1987 and it's been black bitches since. Only kidding had a lot of fun with the swamp collies and even did good with a few. One "almost AFC" had the win but lacked the total points lots of greens. BUT I will never go back.

Wow 1964! Wish I had started when I was 8;-). I would hopefully be farther ahead by now:rolleyes:

I got my first lab in 1977. She was just a pet but she got me hooked. Ran my first hunt test in 1988 or 1989. Ran my first field trial in 2002. Will run my last field trial when I am too old to hobble/crawl to the line!!;-)

If I let him pull me to the line, I'd end up with a busted hip for sure!!

Not THAT old yet regards,

Andy

Saw and worked at my first test in late 97. Got my first lab in Jan 99. (saw a QAA dog run down a crippled goose over 300 yards away and decided I wanted one just like him). It is addicting!!!!! But at least there is plenty of support for that addiction!

C'mon, Judy, don't make my injury sound more spectacular than it was - it was ONLY dislocated with a ruptured tendon!!;-)

One more week and the pin comes out!!

Looking forward to a bendable finger regards,

Andy

It's a joke was trying to be funny hope I didn't offend the 'fluffies" . In fact back then there were many more Goldens running in trials then today! I just didn't have the money to buy anything of quality. My first Golden I paid $30. for her. She certainly wasn't the greatest water dog, but, did nicely on land. She did have nice hips, was cleared at Dr. Rieser's place in Skokie Illinois. The GRCA Advisory Board pre-dated OFA and it was a great contribution to the dog world. My "Pat" had a below 1000 number OFA Excellent! Her pedigree went back to some of the first Goldens in five generations that came to this country. The next Golden I got was well bred out of the old Stilrovin lines AFC Gunnerman's Coin of Copper and FC/AFC Savannah Gay sibling , she was dysplastic and after we won a licensed Qual she lost about 75% of her hearing! I do love the fluffies, but, now love the black bitches more!

Been messing with hunting dogs since I was a kid…first time I felt “success” as you call it was standing in a stream looking down at a brown trout in my landing net, that I had caught, on a fly I had tied, out of the tail of a pheasant I had shot , that was flushed and retrieve by a dog I trained. It is a moment I will never forget.

I started training hunting dogs 10 years ago but got into AKC Hunt tests 4 years ago and I am now training a dog for Deby's this spring. Man it is addictive.

I started my journey on January 1st, 2000...the day I brought home my 1st gundog to start out the new millennium
