When I had my dog xrayed at the vet for his hips and elbows they said they needed his AKC registration number to submit to OFA. When lookng at the OFA website I see they have Labradoodle listed as a breed. Just curious how that works out if you need an AKC registration number?

I believe they just want the registration number so OFA can submit it to AKC so it goes on the dogs permanent AKC records as a service to you...you can still get an OFA certification on a dog without an AKC registration.

It works like this...OFA has theirhand out also. OFA a mutt, 30 bucks or whatever.

I am throughly convinced that if you have a good product and are doing everthing right you are in the minority.

Hey, I think it's great to be able to tell the prospective Doodle buyers to be sure they buy from "reputable" breeders doing ALL the health clearances. Well here goes:

From the lab (or golden) side, the breeder should have hip, elbow, heart, CERF, PRA, CNM and eventually EIC clearances. Maybe thyroid & patella too, depending on lines.

From the poodle side: hips, elbow, CERF, PRA, patellas, sebacious adenitis (skin disease) to start with...

Of course both sides should be free of epilepsy, allergies, etc.. and be proven in their fields. LOL. I won't hold my breath that the Labradoodles (read F1 Lab x poodle mixes) currently being produced in the USA are in the same league clearance wise as the ones that are well established (as a true breed) in Australia, etc. But if someone is silly enough to pay up to $1800 for a mixed breed, at least they should be able to demand health clearances!

Well I have no real love for them either, but they are here to stay and there's not a damn thing anyone can do about it...in 10 years or less, the breed will be recognized by AKC. You can bank on that.

Every purebred dog in the world today is a mix and match of other breeds due to an inherent need. Someone wanted a dog to retrieve birds, so he mixed and matched traits and boom...a lab was born.
Someone wanted a dog to retrieve in very cold climates and protect the birds commercially harvested....and bang...a chessie was born.

Someone wanted a dog to kick the snot out of all the other dogs and bang...a pitbull was born.
Someone wanted a dog to fit in their purse and bang...an ankle biter was born!:D

Now we have people that like labs, but hate shedding and bang...a labrodoodle was born...ugly friggen things but as long as there is a market, the breed will flourish.

OFA recognizes several hybrids like doodles and cockapoos. CERF has even more listed, variations I've never heard of but quite imaginative, though the goals listed on the home page state "purebred dogs". I don't imagine a lot of hybrid breeders do health clearances since one of their selling hypes is hybrid vigor and best of both worlds stuff, nothing bad from either breed, blah blah blah. If people believe the marketing and pay the prices, not much anyone can do about it except shake their heads and mutter. Of course OFA and CERF and any other registry that can will try for their share of a market as well.

Thanks. Just seems funny that they have it listed as a breed of dog. Next it will be Chowbadors.....we actually had a pet store here advertising Chowbadors for sale.
Well, I almost had some Turbadors; My Yorkie named Turbo....

You guys need to look in the classifieds more often.
We have Porkies advertised in our paper right now. We've had Chesadors, Puggles, Shi-poos (or is that *hitty poos?), Lhasa-poos (or is that Lotsa Poo?). A new one I saw the other day was Bugs (boston terrier x pug). Oh, and the girl locally who was doing Chesadors was "planning" a Dashcha-dor (sp?) litter last fall, but I'm afraid they must have been all presold as I never saw the announcement. How fun it is to be in rescue w/ these idiots!!!!:(
