Well, one of Spanky's sisters has been ptarmigan hunting a couple of times practically in her backyard. Her name is Tundra, and she is 4 1/2 months old. I am looking forward to going out with them this fall! http://fishalaskanexperience.com

Very nice pix.The season is in the spring not the fall?

When I was in Alaska we went Moose or Caribou hunting, don't remember which.

Kept seeing small bushes with a bunch of black "berries" on them.

Looking a LOT closer, those "berries" were the eyes of ptarmigan!!!!

The seasons are from mid august until our "spring". The pictures were taken this spring obviously, and she got to go a few times. I guess they drive about 5 miles from home to the tundra. That would be sweet! She even pounced on one she found that didn't flush. For a guy who has never trained a hunting dog, and lives out in the sticks, I think he is doing pretty well with her. SHe was one of my favorites and I called her Turquoise girl for her paint spot. I sent him the link to this, maybe he will make some fine comments about her skillzzzzz ;)

We went out today and stomped around a new area and all we found was feathers. Although Tundra did get me excited when she made a hard left and b-lined for the brush, what we found looked like a fox picnic. After three times out she's catching on what we're doing, she winded that mess from about fifty feet. I'm done shooting now, I've scratched my itch and I'll leave the rest to make babies. Hopefully we get a good hatch this summer.

Great pics!! To get that many ptarmigan, I would have to hunt, oh say, about 10 years in Colorado. They are there but very hard to find.

I am pretty sure you guys will make a deadly hunting team! Sweet! I can't wait to go out with you this fall! It will be hard deciding which dog has to stay home. Mom or sister! Anyhow, give her a big squish for me! And if you guys ever come back to town, you MUST come training with us! :D

Ps. My training partner ELoy was quite pleased that she has been into the wild birds already. I sent him the pictures. He is secretely wishing he would have taken a pup.

Cool pics, going back to the great tasteing part , is the meat white? And are the males the ones with the brown breast feathers? Or are they just more mature birds. Very nice looking puppy as well, and looks like she is going to have a fun life ahead of him.
The meat is dark. And the brown color is the start of the summer color. They turn white in winter.

Copper sure puts his stamp on his pups doesn't he? That pup looks like a couple of pups out of my Copper litter.
Yeah, all of the puppies are turning out to be very pretty. Only a couple of them look like Darla in the face. SOme of them have super thick wavy fur on their backs which has to be from Copper. I have to say, all my training partners LOVE the way Spanky looks. Can't wait to see what Howards yellow puppy looks like! Guess she is quite a marker too!
