Just stupid. I do think the moderator has probably challenged Evan before. It's not like he was blatently advertising his SmartFetch book. Sounds like it's all about power and money...

I think that this is one of the problems with this type of communications. When I read your posts Terry, I thought that your comments were jovial, but that's a hard tone to get across. My writings skills are so poor, that I rarely answer questions with more than a 'Yes' or 'No'. Luckily, many people here CAN write well and can get their point across.

I think that its sort of fun to read a post from someone who I recognize, maybe a little famous in our small world. If they are making a living from dogs, so what? They probably know a lot more than I do (but then, most people do).

Joe

Well the poster had a question on FF. Look at Evan's reply. No training help, no suggestions, no clarifying questions. Just a brag that she already had the best and only authority on the subject. Look at how many pro's post free help and answers on these boards. How would ya'll feel if that pro then sent you a bill for that answer? If you're ok with it, I'll start printing invoices and hit the mailbox. Oh and its fairly simple to become a sponsor. Course marketing dollars are an added expense to the overhead.

Why even bring that pizzing match to this forum to discuss? If you do not like a forum or how it is moderated, then move on down the road. There are other choices.
I was looking for a little support. I have friends here who would have my back a little bit. I was upset that something started so innocent and then got blown way out of proportion and I just ewanted someone else's opinion on whether or not the guy was bring an a-hole.

Will you be my friend?

It is like the movie where the paperboy rides around on his bike say "Where's my two dollars, I want my two dollars". I don't always take offense with that but thats just me. It is funny like in the movie.

Leddy,

Any time it is referred to as a contest, it means that there's more than one person choosing to actively participate.

How about we let this one go, and let the folks on the Waterdog board handle their own affairs?

It may seem, today, like RTF is preferable. We've certainly been through our own rocky times on good old RTF over the past 10 years. These things are cyclical.

Moderators are human. I'm sure I've called out someone publicly before and wound up regretting it later. I'm sure I've called out someone before and not regretted it, and had backlashes of some sort.

The keyboard and the "submit" button are sometimes just too easy for folks to type out their frustrations and sometimes send off messages that they'd not communicate the same in person.

These resources are here, in large part, to give back to the sport. While many of these boards have paying sponsors, they also offer lots of completely free opportunity for folks to gain value - with absolutely no strings attached.

It's all good folks...let's move on and have fun!

I think the guy was being an a-hole. I was going to respond, but thought you did a pretty good job.

Can we define fun? :D
Some have a great time using a canoe paddle as a spoon to stir the pot
One mans trash regards….

So Evan G. should stop being Evan G., he should sign up under an assumed name and pretend he knows nothing? And all the other Waterdoggies should remove their kennel names and websites and not promote a trainer who is not part of Team Waterdog, not talk about any training products they like because it conflicts with a sponsor's advertisements, etc.? It could go on and on... but somehow does not seem to be an issue here. God forbid I go to Cabela's wearing a Bass Pro t-shirt, they might call security and escort me out.

This is about the sport... it is about the dogs... if not for it and them, there would be no sponsors and no prodcuts to sell... this should be kept in mind when certain people are so worried about 'biting the hand that feeds them'... perhaps they have forgotten who has the hands and who is doing the feeding?

Afterall, it is a big dog world and there is room for all...

Sorry Chris,
I didn't realize what I was getting started. i thought it was just a little innocent venting.

live and learn regards,

Terry

P.S. I promise to refrain from such behavior in the future.
a soft answer turneth away wrath....proverbs something or other

On 4/9/08 I sent a pm to Evan asking about his program. He was quick to reply back and asked if I would send him an e-mail, explain where I was in training and what I was looking for because the pm feature has limited text. I had asked if his program would be a good fit. I did send him the e-mail and did not tell him if I was going to purchase his product or not. I explained the stage that each of my dogs were at and also let him know that I really had little experience training dogs for test situations. Now he most likely thought I was some sort of quack, but I like to hear things from the horses mouth. I have not heard back from him but he did let me know his schedule was real tight at this time. So if this is a man trying to "sell" his product through these forums he did a poor job.........Well, maybe not, I already purchased the entire line of Smartworks. :D

After taking the time to read all seven pages on that site, I came to a few conclusions:

1) Thank God for the RTF

2) Evan's post was hardly self-promoting and I strongly agree with Leddyman

3) That site's moderator is a jerk

4) The saddest part of the whole thing was that everybody lost sight of answering the original poster's question . . . I am glad that doesn't seem to be the case on the RTF. From what I have seen, when people post a question to others on the RTF they recieve a variety of answers from knowledgeable sources without the typical bickering and pissing that most message boards succum to over time.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off wasn't it? Love that movie too :)

Oh, and back on topic. I thought Evan's reply to the OP was more than just a little conceited. I don't find that attractive in a man or a dog trainer especially given my belief that the last word on good dog training certainly has not been written yet. To assume that it has and to believe that he is the one to have written it is a pretty strong statement.

Nevertheless, was it blatant advertising? Probably. But the manner in which the moderator dealt with the issue was completely inappropriate. As others have said, it would have been more appropriate for Evan to be contacted by PM or email and his post removed if it contravened the policies of that board.

Cheers
Kirsty

Mod mighta just had a bad day at work or got a butt chewin' from the spouse. Might be a frustrated wannabe pro. Might be upset that WD even talks about huntin' dawg kind of stuff when everyone knows Dockdogs are way cooler. Mighta even been a bit of an inside joke.

Evan has earned his stripes and seen enough of the petty political bs that goes on that I doubt it even registered with him.

I'm here to tell you that moderators and administrators are as human as the rest of us.

I'm quite sure I've hammered someone just like some appear to perceive Roger's actionsto be. Heck, I've probably hammered Evan before over something.

Moderators are like referees, babysitters, cops, janitors and others all rolled into one.

Would you quit going to your favorite team's games because an ump made a bad call and was in a crappy mood to boot so he threw a coach out for getting lippy? Naw...you'd chalk it up to part of the emotion that goes with the game and you'd come back.

Next? Let's run some dogs.

Chris
