I guess I don't know what the stuff is that Angie is talking about??

Poison Ivy
by The Coasters

She comes on like a rose
But everybody knows (don't cha know, don't cha know)
She'll get you in Dutch (awww)
You can look but you'd better not touch

Poison Ivy, Poison Ivy
Late at night when your sleeping
Poison Ivy comes a creeping around

She's pretty as a daisy (pretty as a daisy)
But look out man she's crazy (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
She'll really do you in (really do you in)
If you let her get under your skin (let her get under your skin)
(repeat chorus)

Measles makes you mumpy
And mumps will make you lumpy
And chicken pox will make you jump and twitch (make you jump and twitch)
A common cold will fool ya
And whooping coughs will cool ya
But poison ivy loves to make you itch (make you itch)

Your gonna need an ocean (gonna need an ocean)
Of calamine lotion (oh, your gonna need it)
You'll be scratching like a hound (boy, you'll be itching)
The minute you start to mess around
(repeat chorus)

Your gonna need an ocean (big, big ocean)
Of calamine lotion
You'll be scratching like a hound (you'll be scratching, you'll be scratching)
The minute you start to mess around
(repeat chorus)

Ed, put down the wacky weed. Step back. Walk away.

I came in contact with some poison parsnip in Vermont last summer - holy moly talk about an intense itching!! Luckily it did not leave any scars but the itching lasted for weeks.

"Poison Parsnip," aka "Wild Parsnip." Picked a few for dinner...I think I'm one of the few who likes parsnips, so I thought "wild" would be better than "store-bought."

I haven't had the displeasure of a poison oak or poison ivy reaction, so I can only imagine how much worse the poison parsnip must be. Has anyone seen it on the West Coast?

TECNU is your friend. Buy it, use it.

I live on the border of National Forest...all the loggers use it, as well as the utility guys.

It's like miracle stuff. I am HIGHLY allergic, but I haven't gotten poison ivy or poison oak breakouts in ages...even when the dogs go into patches and I pet them. (which is how I was getting it)

You can say "poison Ivy " and I start itching.

I always wash withn COLD water and not Hot. I think the hot water makes your pores open up more than the clod water. Use a ton of soap with it as well.
Then rub the blach mixture or alcohol.

I had a judge come down from Oregon to judge back in the 80's. He was introduced to Mexican food, fire ants, and other Texas things. We were driving around the ranch and I told him to take some home with him. I told him it was passion vine. Being October the ivy was this bright orange and vey pretty at the time.
He said I touching it . It is probably some kind of fire plant. " Your food is HOT the ants are HOT so are you plants probably"

Of course I told him what it was afterwards..

Everyone can get burned by wild parsnip. Unlike poison ivy, you don't need to be sensitized by a prior exposure. However, wild parsnip is only dangerous when the juice from broken leaves or stems gets on your skin -- therefore, you can touch and brush against the undamaged plant without any danger.
I'm not buying that broken stem business. I got about 20 areas once on my legs when I was throwing a bird in the stuff and I still have scars. I carry pants now and put them on no matter how hot it is. Very bad stuff. You get blisters just like you have been burned by HCL.

Leaves of Three,Touch and See.;)

Now it's my turn with this nasty stuff.I figured I was immune.50 years running around in woods and fields and I never had a problem.I never even look for it anymore.About this time last week I pulled a bunch of vines down off our building and now my arms look like I put them in a shredder.I guess I'm not immune anymore.Either that or it was a really good batch.

my lab has given it to me many of times last summer. and yes TECNU works. I never knew how I was getting it until i noticed my lab romping around in the stuff and then rubbing up against my legs. The oils transfer from fur to bare skin, ahhhhhhhhhhhh. I have a lot of it on one side of my yard. Never knew how to get rid of it. Always was afraid to spray since my lab is always around...

don't burn it. some fool did that a few years ago and was sent to the hospital.

Whatever you do don't throw it in your "burn pile" The inhaled smoke from buring poison ivy can be lethal. I dont mess around with it even after its dead - we make sure to remove it very carefully. My husband just found a spot on him this morning! Came to me and said "Hey - whats this?" Ahhh.,.. to only be slightly alergic! I Wish! I see the stuff and break out in a rash. Tecnu works ... But I think awareness is key. I can spot it from a mile away I've had it so many times since I was a kid.

My buddy in Allen, Tx runs his beagles in an adjacent field that has PI. Anyhow he pets dogs, dogs had been in PI, PI on his hands, PI rash on Mr Snuffleupigus...yeow!

You could always get some goats. Not positive about poison ivy but they LOVE poison oak....and everything else within reach ;)

We used to stake them out near a patch of it and they'd have it cleared down to the ground in no time.

Always enjoy an old thread where Ed breaks out....into song. As I recall, this was the pink smock era, right Shayne? Oops, didn't mean to awaken you.
