Moose, give the dog some of what you are mixing in the blender, might mellow him down. Bud

HI PJ,

I have a question on your idea. Would your topic about marshals changing running order and using handlers' trucks as holding blinds be considered "political" or "training"? It appears that your bottom-line on that thread was the idea of getting some political backing to get an AKC rule change.

Your idea of making RTF a training-only resource has certainly been teed up on RTF over the years. What we see are that many things are cyclical. RTF itself tends to cycle in terms of the types of threads and activities take place. Sometimes it feels kinda hostile and emotional. Other times it feels very much like a tight-knit, supportive family.

Similarly, RTF'ers themselves go through cycles, at one point, they are a new trainer, sponge-like and eager to take in others' suggestions and ideas on training. Then they go through a phase where they are sick and tired of discussing FF for the hundredth time online. As the RTF'er cycles through his/her progression as a retriever junkie, the reasons and interests that bring them back to RTF evolve and change.

Election years are another cyclical thing that we go through that are bound to influence the sort of subject matter discussed on RTF.

I'd say that we have, as a majority, felt that RTF as a board is more than just pure and strict dog training. Sure it has to have that as a major component. But, there is much more that RTF has served to do to help folks as a resource.

Friendships, marriages, clubs, organizations, new puppy homes and more have all resulted through this board. Heck, competitive websites to RTF have even resulted from this board!

I think that many feel that too much fragmenting of what we have come, since 1998, to know as "RTF", would be perceived as negatively impacting the board.

We've kicked it around and in the past, we've chosen to pretty much leave it as-is. We have a thing called "GDG" which is ideally inserted into the subject line, indicating in "RTF-ese" that the topic is NOT training related.

No matter what, RTF or any resource like it, will be like prospecting for gold. Not every thread that you open will be a gem. Many will be like sand and shale to the prospector and only some true searching will reveal those free nuggets that make the search worthwhile.

I welcome you to RTF to search for those things of value to you!

Chris

One other point, even though some of the political gdg gets real ugly sometimes, those threads would not have a life if people didn't WANT to post on them. I admit, that even though some of it is abhorrent to me, I can not help myself from taking a look now and then to see just what outrageous statement someone is making now:)

As a newbie I disliked the gdg because I feared it would allow attacks from hackers like I had seen on other forums, but hasn't been the case here. Let 'em roll Chris, its all good.

Chris,

Clearly you have been with this forum for quite awhile. I certainly appreciate your perspective and hope that I can add something to the forum.
Paul,
Not only has he been "with this forum quite awhile" he also has been the owner/moderator for quite awhile not the originator but one of the original AKA DoggieGuy??

With that said there are days I also wish there was more training related topics but the reality is this modern era of retrievers is saturated with info and even newbies get up to speed quickly! Then there's the best option of RTF IMHO the "Search" option that offers an answer for almost every training topic!

Peake - Who longs for the days of Team Pinch 'n Burn vs Team Spencer....hmmm, OK scratch that maybe not back to more GDG, lol!

A compromise that I have seen on other forums is to temporarily put up a political forum during just the election season. So the only off-topic subjects moved are the political, and it is only during the most contentious of times.

I am NOT advocating this for RTF! But I have seen it work elsewhere.

I'll make it a bit easier for you. If you see my name as the most recent poster- bet your bippy that it is either GDG or getting there soon.

Just trying to help out in the worst way regards

Bubba

Heck, RTF has no REAL competition!

I have an idea. Lets start a tread on Religion.;-)

Or better yet, let's start or continue the "Swishy" thread or another one that shows more of MooseGooser's pictures!!!! :)

soon we'll have threads about football, but don't look for Gooser.....his beloved Bronchettes seem headed for a less than stellar season

Gooser can you say 5 and 11...;-)

;-)
I can't wait!!!

I was looking at the new Cowboy's Stadium on line. That thing is impressive. Will it be open for the coming season?

And, the really BIG question; Which team will win the SEC?

OH BABY AM I EXCITED FOR FOOTBALL!!! We are just a few days away from the very worse time of th eyear for Sports. Basketball is somewhat enjoyable and after that we are stuck with just baseball. I am not a big baseball fan.. So the build up for Football is big!! We are excited!!

And speaking of the COWBOYS!!! Can you say Superbowl Champs!! Booty, this coming season will be the last year for the current Texas Stadium. Next year they will make the move to the new BAD-BOY stadium.

WOW...with that clever post ya past the 1000 mark. Frame it, cause it prolly won't happen in HRC terms. j/k heh heh heh heh

BTW...that was a great post, Chris. As we have all known...even the Amish holdouts like Dave;-)...this is a 'family' of retriever training lovers, that also have other interests. And like any family discussion about these varied interests, it sometimes gets heated up to the point of uncomfortableness. That's when the family Mama...played by the affable and lovely Vicky Trainor...steps in and sez.."All right kids, enough of yer bickering", and she lowers the boom...or as she so succintly puts it...kicks the slinky down the stairs, and shuts down the thread.

If we can't handle that, Chris and his 'putor gurus have added that little 'ignore' feature, so anyone P&Ming about the lousy topics on some of these threads have no one to blame except themselves for reading them.

It's my suspicion that if Chris did indeed start up a seperate location for 'political' or 'religious' threads, we'd still have those that are bitching about them being in the main forum, sneaking peaks at those new threads, and becoming vociferously adamant about condeming those posters for not believing as they do about the subject.

Not much on RTF is more amusing than some confused yahoo that complains about being picked on because his views differ from the majority of the posters, and he can't seem to get his view followed by anyone. You have to admire their perseverance, while you wonder about their intelligence for allowing themselves to be overwhelmingly clobbered by a 50 gal drum of whoopazz.:p
