Getting ready to restock on heartworm preventitive and looking at options..

Can anyone give me info or experience comparing Iverhart to Sentinel?

Reading up on things it would appear Iverhart doesn't kill fleas, but we have other products in use already for that so why spend triple the money for Sentinel?

Any information appreciated, of course and THANKS in advance.

Sentinel eliminates whipworms (Iverhart does not)

Sentinel is Interceptor plus Program (lufenuron), a compound which impairs the flea's ability to synthesize chitin. The exoskeletons of insects are composed of chitin as well as the flea eggshell and the larval flea protective covering. Program (lufenuron) does nothing to adult fleas but in essence renders them sterile since their eggs do not hatch and the larval stage dies.

Dogs taking Sentinel can still pickup so called hitch hiker fleas, but those fleas cannot reproduce and infest your house and yard.

Program only works when all dogs and cats your premises are receiving it as a monthly pill. For cats there is also an injection given every 6 months.

Hello Auntie Joyce ;)

Long story for Saturday and it continues today. Nothing you want to hear though enough to get me completely off the midset of training any dogs.

Vet is trying to conveince me that sentinel is better for the field dog that heartgaurd or interceptor (exactly what I have always used).

That got me looking and wondering why pay some of these silly prices.

For instance..

I restocked on bio-spot again today (another thing the vet recommended against that works great for a fraction of the price of advantix). I paid something like 14 for a 6 mo supply (each dog) and if I wait and order my wormmeds at the same time, no shipping. At retail today that same bio-spot would have cost me 39 bucks...

So I'm looking in to what to buy and where to buy it to protect everyone but not waste a ton of money.

Thanks Ed, I was hoping you would respond in particular.

you won't need to spend much extra if your only problems are fleas, an occasional Capstar tablet will kill any hitch hiker fleas your dogs picks up

If you are using Frontline Plus or Advantix because you also have tick problems then the extra cost for Sentinel may not be justified

Thanks again Ed,

I get it fully now. That's for clarifying the information, in particular, how Program works.

It's simple logic that you have to have it on all the dogs or the flea just moves to one who doesn't have it and whala! But... if you don't know how it works you might be sold a bill of goods (or a box of pills in this case).

Interceptor and Bio Spot have served me well until this conversation with the vet got me off track...

You do have to step up the Bio Spot to once every three weeks if the dogs are in the water a lot but given it's cost vs. advantix that's not a problem.

I appreciate the clarity, as always, regards,
