Hey everyone!

I'm looking for help searching for current bloodlines with Lucky's Super Toby.

I went to the OFA website and found his offspring, but it's too much data to search through to find current "champion" bloodlines out of Super Toby.

If anyone knows the bloodline and can help, I'd be very appreciative.

Thanks!!!

Known as the dog with half a tail that won the 1988 NFC with Charlie Hays as the handler. One of Fred's next dog, FC-AFC Wags, was sired by him. As was Marvin Quanruud's double header winner, FC-AFC Super Duper Cork. Little did I know how good Cork would be when he asked me to take photos of Marvin and Cork at Kelly Farms running the derby.

Richard and Jeff,

Thanks so much for your replies!!

Super Toby is the Sire of one of my Uncle's best male dogs (The Fire Express). We took a few REALLY awesome dogs from his line. Toby was a really special dog, and though we are still keeping his line going, my Uncle doesn't do tests or trials.

That's not the all important thing at all, we've had great dogs that were incredible in the field. My cousin and I are taking a different approach to dogs than him however. But we all saw the brilliance of Toby.

Thanks again.

FC AFC Em Dee's Ace High was owned by Boyd Skille who I think was some type of Eye doctor hence the name referring to MD. Boyd was from Alaska and the dog trained in his later years by Bill Fabian of North Branch, Minnesota. The dog was with Bill when not in Alaska and died of gastric torsion where I don't know. Another dog with a great trialing bitch line.

Toby's sire was Hall of Fame retriever FC AFC E-Lynn's Super Strike Lucky, who was also owned by Carl Ruffalo. Carl, who made both Lucky and Toby, has stated Lucky was twice the dog Toby was. Lucky was just not lucky enough to win the National, but his son was. It should be a great lineage. I have often wondered, if you were to take great dogs like these from the past, and trained them as pups using today’s methods, if they would still be at the top of the heap? Some people say that the dogs of today are far better than the dogs of yesteryear. I am not really sure about that? I'll bet these guys would love to be running some of their past dogs in todays trials.

Toby’s original owner was Dan Priebe. Dan lived in Rochester MN and was in a training group with Carl and several other retriever folk. Carl has always mentored people and encouraged young people to train their retrievers. Marv was also in this training group and both Marv and Dan had good dogs. Marv’s dog went on to win a double header. Of course Toby went on to win a NFC. When Dan got a new job assignment and was going to leave the state, Carl purchased Toby. Carl did receive an offer he could not refuse for Toby. Carl is still looking for a dog that has the capabilities of Lucky. Very few of those dogs can be found.

Jack

I inadvertently neglected to name Dan Priebe as the "original" owner of Toby. Jack--how old was Toby when Carl purchased him from Dan?

I do remember hearing from Carl that Dan ran Toby on long blinds down the sidewalks of Rochester.
