I neutered my male at 6.5. He was having prostate issues. It helped but he still has flare ups of urination problems (read standing and dribbling for 10 minutes). The vet did a full work up, x-rays etc. The next option was neurological. It came down to trying one or a combination of 5 different drugs. I didn't think the symptoms warranted the "shotgun" approach of treatment.

So, unless you have intolerable behaviour (humping etc.) or a health issue I'd let him keep the twins. As far as unwanted pregnancies, a fenced yard or kennel works wonders.

Until then, our dogs will likely remain intact in spite of the looks I get from time to time...

I never had this problems till recently. Went to girlfriends over 4th July and all her family kept asking why our male boxer wasn't fixed??? We were both like because we dont want to have him fixed. They couldn't understand it then told them I had a male lab that won't be fixed either. "Aren't you worried about them fighting or having puppies with someones dog?" No my dogs listen to me and behave and if the neighbors dog gets breed by one of them she got into my yard. They just wouldn't drop it  finally we told that it just wasn't going to happen that they are our dogs!!!!!!!!

I tried to attach a very well documented survey of the literature on the subject written by Laura Sanborn. However, there is a limit on pdf files of 19.5 kb and this is about 95 kb.

Instead, try to go to http://tinyurl.com/64oceu to read the file.

I neutered my old male when he was 10 and he developed prostate problems. I am getting ready to have the 6 1/2 year old neutered - he won't be used and he's not going to be shown, and I don't want to wait that long with him.

I, too, have never had an unplanned litter.
