Hey Y'all,

I'm looking for someplace to get a whelping box that doesn't cost $300. I'm NOT good with tools, but if you have a REALLY easy design I could struggle through building one.

Any suggestions?

We used a kids wading pool. $11.00 at Wally-World. We also used a baby monitor and checked frequently to make sure no one got squished. A 72 year old friend of ours (the Grand Dame of the Foxhound world) always uses a wading pool inside an ex-pen, and when she has large litters, she only puts half in with the Mom and half in a basket with a heating pad. She's had hundreds of puppies in the wading pool and hasn't lost one yet. Not a perfect solution, but you don't have to build it, it's easy to clean, it doesn't weigh a ton, and it doesn't cost $300. We use washiable liners from KV Vet supply inside... those are a Godsend. Wash and dry quickly, wick away moisture and provide excellent traction for the little guys.

We use either the wading pool (large = 5ft diameter) and sheets that we picked up from a garage sale. Once the pups are old enough to crawl out, usually using mom as a ladder, we move them to a whelping pen that is 4 x 8 x 24" that we made with furniture grade plywood covered in 4mm heavy plastic sheeting. The boards were cut by home depot so no work is involved there, the plastic sheeting is stapled on and removed/replaced with each litter, the boards are screwed together using 2" x 4" x 24" corner anchors with 2 in screws. The whole thing is placed on two layers of the same plastic that covers the sides and is brought up the sides on the outside and stapled to form a moisture proof barrier since the pen is in our basement. We use pine shavings for litter, the pen is big enough to fit a crate in it to start with crate training, and the pups haven't gotten out of it yet with four litters so far, all going home at 8 wks old. Material list:
2 sheets furniture grade plywood, 4 x 8 ft, ripped down the center, the other one ripped and cut into fourths. You will have two extra pieces for other projects.
1 2 x 4 x 8 cut into 24" lengths, use the extra pieces for pig rails in the corners if needed
1 small box of 2" wood screws
1 battery operated drill and screw bit
1 roll of 4mm heavy duty plastic
staple gun and staples
sheets or carpet for when pups are young, wood shaving once they are at least 3 wks old.
If a blond polish girl can do it, so can you. Of course my dad was a carpenter and I helped him frame houses, but that doesn't count!

I use both sizes of wading pools depending on size of litters or sometimes use small to begin with--larger when they are growing and move to welping box as described by firehouselabs. If you want to get fancy and have a hundred bucks to spend you can get the Melamine panels ( not sure that is the correct spelling) have Home Depot cut them for you. You then can drill holes and screw it togeather...it is a little easier to clean and you don't have to buy plastic each time.

Chris,

What is the pedigree for your bitch? I know you bred her to Prime and I have his pedigree....BTW when are they due?

I've thought about using 2-3" pvc and creating an easy rail system that breaksdown for a kiddie pool. Just cut holes in pool sides and slide the rails through. You could get fancy and make an octagon with some 45's.

I've seen this done with someone who used some sort of metal piping as the rails, seemed to work okay. I don't like the wading pools because of the noise the plastic makes and the pups are usually able to crawl out by 2 weeks so prefer something with higher sides.

There's no noise if you use a whelping box liner (which is felt on a rubber backing) and when ours were big enough to get out, we moved everybody to a Pet Yard, which is really designed for children. It's heavy-duty plastic (costs about 80 bucks) and has low enough sides that the bitch can climb in an out, but the pups stay IN. It is larger than a standard whelping box, and easy to move around from place to place.
